TODAY, on August 17th, I celebrate 21 years clean and sober.🙏 I'm old enough to remember when I couldn't put 21 days, or even 21 hours sober together, so it's a pretty big deal. I decided to open up about it on this app because, during those awful years when I was fully in the grips of my addiction, I felt hopeless… until I heard someone else's story that was just like mine. It remains my sincere hope that someone else will see me share about my sobriety on this site, and feel the hope necessary to stay sober JUST FOR TODAY. Now, Twitter isn't the best place to openly share the most BRUTAL details about your journey, as I'm sure many of you see people throwing that stuff in my face on every reply to my tweets, often with disgusting lies. But I'll say to those people, I pray you never have to experience that, either yourself, or with a loved one, because it's truly painful. And your use of that to attempt to hurt me says more about you and your lack of humanity than it does about me. For the record, no, I didn't sell my kids for crack. That's disgusting, as are the soulless people who insist on repeating that vulgar lie. But, over 21 years ago, I DID sell their toys, and many of my own personal possessions. At one point, I was just another homeless person on the street. It was brutal, and remembering how ugly it was keeps me sober. Going to both AA and NA meetings every day for the first five or seven years, along with going to therapy, is ultimately what ended up working for me, after numerous relapses. You'll hear a lot of people with sayings like “Just for Today,” and “This too shall pass.” Those sayings end up being helpful tools in an arsenal, on the road to staying sober One Day At A Time. Even now, after 21 years, there are some days I feel like using. It might just be a flicker, but it's still there, and then I talk about it. So I don't think it ever goes away, but you build up a strength to cope. Everyone doesn't survive addiction. I was lucky. I lived on the streets, had guns pointed in my face many times, been assaulted and arrested, managed to survive by the grace of God. It's awful on the families, who end up watching their loved one change into an out-of-control person who doesn't care about anyone or anything; just about their next high. There are support meetings you can go to if you have a loved one in the grips of addiction, one is called Al-Anon. Thanks for letting me share with you folks about my journey, and thank you for the kindness and encouragement you've given me over the years. I've read replies of folks with 40 years sobriety, and I look forward to getting there. One day at a time. 🙏
