To put it into perspective of how commonplace this is in Japan? It's still done today. You can see stuff like this in Weekly YoungJump published by Shueisha (the people who created Shounen Jump). Popular actors and idols have done it. Even HKT48 Ace Miyawaki Sakura has done it
