🚨Heavy Handed removal of retiree benefits: A retired LCDR was just banned from all Navy bases and facilities in the Hampton Roads area for accidentally having a personal weapon in his vehicle at the base gate checkpoint. The retired naval officer has a Concealed Carry Permit. He also followed all directions provided to him by base security while voluntarily discussing his CC permit and noting that he had mistakenly had the weapon in his vehicle. Security suggested he turn around and come back without the weapon. He did so gladly and immediately returned back through the same gate (without the weapon of course) while the same security guards offered apologies for the inconvenience. The subsequent ban was an unexpected shock and a grave heavy-handed response to an honest mistake. The JAGs and Commander at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek have unilaterally removed all retiree benefits (except retiree pay) from an honorable man. He can no longer attend base functions, work a job on the base, use MWR facilities, or the commissary (military grocery store). Based on Secretary @PeteHegseth’s desire to ensure Second Amendment rights are defended by our Institutions, and that those exercising these rights are not unlawfully weaponized against, I pray this ban is quickly reversed.

Under current law, drivers are not allowed to hold a phone or electronic communications device while operating a vehicle. This includes talking, texting, or using an app. Using a handheld cell phone while driving is punishable by a fine. Violating the hands-free law for a second time within 36 months of a prior conviction for the same offense will result in a point being added to a driver’s record. CAL FIRE is undergoing one of the most significant staffing transitions in its modern history as the department shifts toward increased permanent staffing. Here in our CAL FIRE Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit, we are proud to host our first-ever Firefighter II Academy with 10 newly hired personnel. While similar to the entry-level Firefighter I role, the Firefighter II position is a full-time, year-round assignment. As part of this transition, our goal for this year is to have each of our 10 field battalions assigned one permanently staffed engine consisting of a Fire Captain, Fire Apparatus Engineer and Firefighter II. We’ll still have 31 engines in operation as we have in the past, the only change is the staffing model on 10 of those engines. This year we are striving to hire 30 Firefighter II personnel while maintaining 186 seasonal Firefighter I positions. Our workforce continues to demonstrate resilience, adaptability and professionalism as we move forward with this major staffing evolution and strengthen our year-round emergency response capabilities.
