I’ve said for a long time. Refs are seen as the devil, could we make it cool? Important, respected?Celebrate it! If coaching wasn’t seen as only way to stay in the game, recruiting would skyrocket. How many college players that don’t make it could make great high level officials

The NFL is laying groundwork for hiring replacement officials this season if the league is unable to agree on a new collective bargaining agreement with the NFL Referees Association, per @SeifertESPN. espn.com/nfl/story/_/id…

“Dip time” &“Stay athletic as long as you can” Come to balance/shimmy/swoop. Yes, control your feet but too many over-sink . Lower center but think basketball, until the very end. Notice the late dip. Don’t want to get stuck in bottom=sink and go quick, think plyometric, boom!

Never give up. Great effort, great pursuit. Also, offensive players, don’t get caught in your tippy-toes.

2nd man in reads. If 1 is low go high. If 1 is high go low. Clean shots. No friendly fire. If ball is trapped, burry the runner! If ball is out, attack it. Override: if 1 is not controlling carrier secure tackle first.

@ScottLeech72 nails this in the simplicity. Add space. Add various athletic movements before entering the contest. Add obstructions. Add more players. Remember, slow speed tracking is not tracking (so stop doing 75% run&gather) Creating and Closing Space simplifaster.com/articles/game-…

Progression from last post: Ball security. While driving and keeping good body position add in ball security. Bag holder=stay on shoulder, resist, force the drive. Defender 2= target ball. Secondary= grapple a bit to try to lift carriers chest.
Andrew Ryland@ADRCoachDev

So important for YAC & easier to train= body position. The balance of playing “heavy” so you don’t get lifted/stood up but not going so low you collapse under the pressure. Coaching point: shield holder has to stay on shoulder to provide resistance to drive through.

@AdamArchuleta “How to use their body” is gold. The concepts are easy to understand. Getting your body to do it is a different thing. Doing it vs people who are trained to not let you do it is even a step above.

Football players would be much better at tackling if they practiced year-round with only these types of drills. They need THOUSANDS of reps to understand how to use their body, maintain proper pad level and footwork, and learn how important it is to strike the ground hard with the lead foot to generate force. This is an easy and far more effective way to learn tackling without pads while avoiding injuries. Shoulder pads and helmets can hinder learning because they naturally cause the defender and runner to compensate upon contact. The focus ends up being on the contact, rather than FEELING the proper technique. Using these pads thousands of times lets you learn what it feels like to absorb and deliver contact. Proper feet placement and force into the growing is a critical detail that I see few coaches understand or emphasize.

Game week work for England. Look like a focus on going low (giving away the gameplan?) Number one thing I hear from coaches is players losing feet/no leg drive. It has to be focused on and trained. Have to Own that position so comfortable to drive

@TBlazer5AS1 I find myself using it a lot. Tackle, carrier, block, block defeat. Big dudes are trying to lift you. Those that can stay down are a bear to handle.

@ADRCoachDev Yes sir, great progression. Add space, barriers/blockers, and ball carriers who want to win the rep.

Simple drill progression. 1) Tackle straight. 2) Tackle in the angle. 3) Two-way go with a cut. 4) Do something really athletic or a sport specific movement pattern before entering the track phase (shown). Boom!

I’ve talked about this before but ball carriers, similar to rusher can win contact with power by threatening movement. Same way threatening power threat causes players to root cleats and brace and get done by speed/movement.

I used to think this as a player and it jumps out every “clinic season” and drill tape. LB Drop and Break drills. Ain’t no QB in the history of the world ever moved, looked or shoulder turned like that coach is.
