The role of Editorial at Anthropic continues to become ever more central to our public benefit mission. Quality of writing is important but quality of thought is even more so. I specifically want to find domain experts/original thinkers who can critically engage on the substance.

@patio11 Doing all of the assigned reading in college is a cheat code. Everything becomes easier if you make the time and commit the focus required to stay up to date with the syllabus.

Doing the reading is a superpower, and it's even better in a world where "no one" is doing the reading. (Inspired by a conversation I had with some college students.)

Well said! I would add that many, many people find the most rewarding part of their days interacting with others, especially in person. Creating, maintaining, and refining bespoke software could easily become a “second job” that detracts from what people find most fulfilling in the workplace.

A bespoke software revolution? I don't buy it. It'll exist. It already exists. Small consultants and big consulting firms have made custom software for years. It almost always sucks. It’s bloated, confusing, and because the client pays, it’s built wrong in all the ways. Who’s excited about bespoke software? Software makers! Of course they're excited about building bespoke software — that's what they do. X is full of them. Your feed is full of people who love making software talking about making software. Of course they’re excited about the revolution. Echo, echo, echo... Most people don’t like computers. Nobody in tech wants to say that out loud. People tolerate computers. They use them because they have to. Given the choice, most would rather not think about them at all. So when someone suggests that AI means everyone will build their own custom tools, ask who "everyone" is. The three-person accounting firm drowning in client paperwork? They want the paperwork gone, not a new system to maintain. The regional logistics company with 40 trucks? They want the routes optimized, not Joe spouting off about this new system he’s been messing around with. The law firm billing 70-hour weeks? They want leverage on their time, not a software project to design. They don’t hate technology. But building and maintaining their own critical systems isn’t their wheelhouse, regardless of how much faster and easier it’s become. It's another job on top of the job. Will these people use AI? Absolutely, for all sorts of things. Will some outliers go deep and build real custom systems? Sure, but they're almost always people who already had some pull toward software. The curiosity was already there. They were dabblers before. Giving everyone access to software building tools doesn't mean everyone becomes a builder. A powerful excavator doesn't turn a homeowner into a contractor. Most people just want the hole dug by someone else. They don’t want the responsibility either.

1. When you write something intended to be read by an important person, go through it and cut every unnecessary word. 2. The reader of anything you publish is an important person.

@vicious696 Given the cost of so many things, I agree wholeheartedly. If the industry could focus on a steady cadence of high-quality games at different price points on current hardware WHILE valuing the creators behind them, that would be a win.

This generation of gaming has barely lived up to its potential with rising costs and shortages not helping matters so I’m not in a rush for next gen hardware IMO PlayStation should delay the PS6 and Valve and Xbox should delay their hardware too

@thedankoe Agreed. Long-form pieces inspire contemplation rather than just infotainment. Grappling with nuance is essential to forming comprehensive, and ultimately, actionable ideas.

$1 million dollar prizes aside, I think there's been a quiet hunger for articles. The pendulum swung too far in the direction of TikTok and endless scrolling and the internet has a chance to self-correct. I don't think the human brain was meant to be ripped in a thousand different directions as soon as you get on your phone. Too much chaos that has downstream affects on the quality of everyday life. Long form content allows you to focus on set of ideas. It brings order to the mind. You learn more, you feel better, and usually you're left with something you can actually apply to your life, even if it's just a better way of thinking. Especially with AI, we've gotten to the point where we think we want things as short as possible. We have this deranged desire to "get to the point" when the point is to sit with it. You can collect all of the tips and tricks you want but you're completely missing the context that allows you to turn those tips into results. A bullet list of actionable steps will do absolutely nothing for you. Pre-2015 books are the best option, but articles are a great step in what I think is the right direction.

Last week, the SkyBound team participated in two days of discussions focused on making Indiana's Next Generation School Improvement Grant (SIG) program as transformational as possible for students, educators, families, and communities. We're rarely all in the same room, especially for multiple days, so the time was incredibly valuable! I'm so lucky to call Krista Stith, Daryl Werner, Christina Lear, and Charles Williams colleagues.

The Clicks Communicator looks like a modern take on the BlackBerry Classic, which was a joy to use. It’s wonderful to see @clickskeyboard growing and offering their first phone. The slightly larger keyboard, which is also touch sensitive, looks like a dream. The replaceable, colorful backplates and customizable light-up (clickable) button look stylish. I’ve seen commentary critiquing Pluribus’s depiction of Carol as not steadfast enough compared to Manousos, but I think Carol’s trajectory throughout the season is how many people might react. 1/2

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed Pluribus, but the finale left me wondering why one exchange didn’t happen between Carol and Zosia. If the Others gave Carol an atom bomb, why couldn’t she ask for her eggs/STEM cells? Even if the answer were “no,” I would’ve liked to hear why. Thoughts?
