People really want Martin Odegaard gone, and it doesn’t make sense. I guarantee those who want him gone will wish we had someone like him when he does eventually leave. He hasn’t been fully fit for large stretches over the past two years, yet when he does play, he controls everything. Tempo, spacing, progression. It all runs through him. When he’s out, the midfield just isn’t the same. That’s not coincidence. He’s also not playing a traditional 10. He’s constantly dropping deep, helping build play, just from a deeper part of the field. In some cases dropping deeper than Rice and Zubi. Judging him like he’s supposed to just sit high and rack up final-third numbers misses the point completely. He’s playing to Arteta’s system. Not the fan’s system. He is our most creative player. Just in a role people don’t fully understand.
