At a time when mental health policies nationwide are moving in a more humane direction, today’s announcement by the Mayor raises major concerns. My statement:

.@NYCLU on @NYCMayor involuntarily committing those with mental illness who can’t take care of themselves “The Mayor’s attempt to police away homelessness… is a page from the failed Giuliani playbook. With no real plan for housing, services, or supports...”

The Mayor’s involuntary removals plan released today is a throwback to the widespread involuntary hospitalization of the ’80s & ’90s. Here’s our response from BMC Executive Director @AnthoninePierre:

If the mayor, who himself joined in painting a “Black Lives Matter” sign outside of Trump Tower, wants these words to be more than a slogan, he needs to finally make the necessary investments in the futures of Black communities in this third pandemic year.

Our statement today on Mayor Adams’ Met Gala appearance last night from BMC Executive Director Anthonine Pierre: Mayor Adams’ fashion proclamation last night to end gun violence uses none of his power to increase youth services in Black communities at risk of violence.
