Good article in the NBR - National Business Review this morning from Nicholas Pointon (paywall, sorry), picking up on Hon Andrew Bayly's (@bayly_andrew) comments at the Financial Services Council Outlook event this week. Our Chair Jeremy Muir is also featured answering some questions around the regulatory treatment and way forward in New Zealand. TLDR - we are well set up in New Zealand to welcome businesses who want to offer crypto services, but we could do even better, with perhaps a more formal licensing option, and of course continuing to address the ease of accessing banking services. But the basic legal rules (e.g. treatment and classification of tokens) are well understood, and the Financial Markets Authority - New Zealand takes a reasoned approach, and through its fintech hub and the #RegulatorySandbox has shown it is open to innovation and new businesses. Nice input from @easycrypto's Paul Quickenden too at the end of the article. Read more here: nbr.co.nz/tech/bayly-on-…

🚨 BREAKING NEWS: Elon Musk’s X Partners with Visa for Digital Wallet Expansion 🚨 In a major move that could shake up the payments landscape, @elonmusk's @X has teamed up with @Visa to push deeper into the digital wallet space. According to @CNBC, this partnership will enable users to make payments inside and outside of X’s ecosystem, bridging social media and financial transactions in a way never seen before. For the blockchain and Web3 community, this signals a significant step toward mainstream adoption of digital finance solutions. While details are still emerging, could this be X's next step toward crypto integration? Musk has previously hinted at enabling payments in multiple currencies, including crypto, and Visa’s global network provides a powerful foundation for scaling such a vision. At Blockchain New Zealand, we’re closely watching how this development will impact the future of digital payments, stablecoins, and decentralized finance (DeFi). What do you think? Is this the beginning of X becoming a major fintech powerhouse? 🔗 Read more: cnbc.com/2025/01/28/elo…

Donald Trump’s re-election on November 5, 2024, was a turning point for global crypto policy. With 15% of Americans invested in digital assets, the industry’s backing of Trump—recognising his pro-business stance—was seen as instrumental in his victory. This cemented crypto as a serious political force in the U.S. Now, imagine a country where 17% of the population holds crypto. This is New Zealand... A strong signal appeared across the ditch today that Blockchain and Crypto will become an election issue this year in Australia. Let's hope the New Zealand government is taking notice and we see this trend of action here also. Massive congratulations to @amydashrose and the team at Digital Economy Council of Australia (@DECAustralia) for their tireless advocacy for Blockchain. This is the value of organisations like Blockchain NZ and the impact we can have. If you want to see change in the industry here too, join us (lnkd.in/g5Wih-A8). Imagine a world where AI-powered agents are tracking cryptocurrency trends and are able to buy and sell coins autonomously, making you profits 24/7. A cash generating machine. It’s already a thing. ai16z’s Eliza Labs ships white paper for Web3-native AI agents - the Eliza protocol and ai16Z are already providing the frameworks for these autonomous agents - and the space is exploding. Could that with Virtuals.io - a protocol allowing anyone to create autonomous AI Agents that create and publish content, respond to comments and reply to trending posts and you have powerful tools to set up a cash generating machine. This could change everything for Blockchain and AI - creating an entirely new global economy. School yourself cointelegraph.com/news/ai16z-eli… @BlockchainNZ @Web3NZ

BREAKING: Coinbase launches Bitcoin-backed onchain loans via DeFi protocol Morpho (Source: theblock.co/post/335007/co…) TL/DR: - Coinbase now offers Bitcoin-backed onchain loans of up to $100,000 in USDC. - The service is powered by DeFi protocol Morpho, a Coinbase Ventures portfolio company. Coinbase has launched Bitcoin backed onchain loans through Morpho, a decentralized lending protocol available on Ethereum and Coinbase-incubated Ethereum Layer 2 network Base. Customers can borrow up to $100,000 in the USDC stablecoin using their bitcoin holdings on Coinbase as collateral, the company said Thursday. The borrowing process is facilitated by Morpho specifically on Base (not on Ethereum), with Coinbase providing an interface to access the protocol but not directly managing the loans. What does this mean for the Bank controlled lending market? Are home loans next?

134 countries representing 98% of global GDP, including key trading partners, are exploring digital currency. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand – Te Pūtea Matua, is concerned about the limited choices New Zealanders have to pay, and the lack of competition and innovation in our money and payments markets. In a recent RBNZ research effort on Digital Currency, More than 500 individuals and groups have made their voices heard via written submissions and over 18,000 responded to our online survey. 84% of respondents were worried about losing access to banknotes and coins (physical cash) and 90% of people were worried that introducing Digital Cash would result in their spending being monitored or controlled. What are your thoughts on #NewZealand deploying a Digital Currency?
