@IlliniDan2 @afneil He went on to say regime change was an aim a grand total of five minutes later. It either is an aim, or he doesn’t know what his aims are. I would suspect it is the latter.

@BlueCollarBrit @afneil So you missed the part where he said regime change is not the goal? Thanks for making my point. Regime change can only happen if Iranians make it happen.

Trump’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz begins today. It will take some days to make it comprehensive. Those who think this will bring the Iranian regime quickly to its knees as it runs out of revenues are in for a surprise. Iran ramped up oil exports to an average of 2m bpd in Jan/Feb. The Chinese ‘teapot’ refiners — smallish, privately owned — who take 90% of it couldn’t absorb it all. So around 160 million barrels of Iranian oil is already on ships floating on the ocean OUTSIDE the Persian Gulf ready to move to refiners when capacity allows. Tehran could keep its customers supplied until mid-July, based on the 1.8 million barrels a day of Iranian oil that China imports. Not sure the American consumer facing rising petrol prices at the pump will be that patient.

@TheEconomist Their sole aim is to outlast, without a ground war or a civil uprising regime change still seems distant.

Clear aims and an exit strategy are the basis of a successful outcome following a foreign intervention. There is no doubt that Trump would certainly like regime change in Iran but he will no doubt scale back his aims to fit a narrative of victory. The only real possibility other than a scaling back of war aims to fit a negotiated settlement is an escalation which remains possible.

@BlueCollarBrit @afneil Regime was specifically not a goal. It was repeated many times. If you dont know that, find another news source.

@mjamesevans @afneil Admittedly a little clumsy from me on my wording there. I have no doubt that many if not most Iranians dislike and do not condone the actions of the regime; it is cruel and oppressive to them

@BlueCollarBrit @afneil Its the Islamic republic not the Iranians, let's not forget that those supporting Islamic republic are dancing on the graves of 40,000 young Iranians who dared protest for freedom.

@FTeal5531316 @afneil Hi Farah, you are absolutely correct. I was a little clumsy there, I am absolutely referring to the regime. It is cruel and impressive to the Iranian people.

You make a fair point, I should have specified the Iranian regime rather than the Iranian people. I have no doubt that many if not most Iranians dislike and do not condone the actions of the regime; it is cruel and oppressive. The Iranian regime has stood sine the fall of the shah and shows no signs of capitulation as the ruling entity.

You absolutely implied that with the first statement that you posted suggesting anything else is simply a lie. You chose to ignore that there is no clear mandate for this and then suggest that we wouldn’t have got involved with no proof of this whatsoever. “That’s not up for debate” less Vietnam the uk has assisted at just about every turn. “Your government hates ours” our governments are polar opposites but despite this I genuinely believe that the UK government has been doing their best to work with the current US administration. I’m frankly surprised that they have been as reasonable as they have. You then talk about France who are completely irrelevant given that the whole conversation has been about the uk. That being said, France is a sovereign nation they have no obligation to be in NATO, by leaving they lost their responsibilities but also lost their protection. But hey let’s address France too, 90 men and women killed in Afghanistan fighting under article 5 for NATO post 9/11. On our government being unfriendly to your administration, I would wholly disagree. I think our government has been surprisingly reasonable given how they have been belittled and attacked. You’re also clearly happy with the concept of obligation given your comments on Ukraine and it not being the US’ war so why doesn’t that apply in this case? Finally your personal assessment of this war isn’t that you “don’t agree with the attack on Iran” our government has made the same assessment. If that’s your assessment why do you think we would get involved?

@BlueCollarBrit It certainly sounded like you blamed us in your post. Here’s the part I’m referring to. Your soldiers didn’t die for the US as you claimed.

FINALLY, Europe is going to help! Well, AFTER the fighting is over THEN they'll have a "summit" that is. This is Europe in a nutshell. Utterly useless.

@BRICSinfo This was only a matter of time. This was Iran’s reason for blockading the strait in the first place and now the US is doing their job for them.

So you’re saying you’re annoyed that we didn’t get involved even though we weren’t asked to be involved? The strait has been closed as a direct result of US and Israeli strikes, it was open before this conflict. If we had been consulted then we most likely would have helped and thus keeping the strait open would also have fallen on us as well as the US.

No one asked you to get involved in the attack on Iran. Iran has frequently used the straight as a geopolitical lever, employing threats, harassment, and vessel seizures from 2015 to 2024 to disrupt shipping in response to sanctions. While often threatening to close the narrow waterway, Iran typically restricts passage for specific nations—particularly the U.S. and its allies—or targets specific vessels. This is nothing new, they've done this for years. It's one of many reasons we attacked them. If you want your ships to have safe passage, use what's left of your small navy, assuming you can get a ship out of port.

Suez vs Hormuz Egypt’s 1956 nationalization of the Suez canal triggered a failed invasion by Britain, France, and Israel; initial military gains collapsed under US economic pressure and international opposition, marking the end of European colonial dominance and the rise of American influence. Iran’s blocking of the Strait of Hormuz—through which about 20% of global oil and significant LNG flows—in response to U.S.-Israeli strikes has caused massive disruptions, rerouting, soaring energy prices, and widespread economic shocks. Suez signaled Britain’s imperial decline, while Hormuz is increasingly seems to signal American unilateralism. Undoubtedly American hard power will remain following this Iranian excursion, its soft power may however be in jeopardy.
