1. Iran's foreign ministry denies this. Are the mixed signals because of the fog of war and attrition in Iran's leadership, or is Trump simply lying? Both seem plausible, but my hatred of Trump inclines me to think he's lying.
2. Regardless of 1, unless Iran is opening the strait, this means Trump is backing down from his threats to target power plants. That's good, blowing up power plants seems like targeting the civilian population in a cruel way likely to lead to escalation, but it also undermines Trump's credibility as a negotiator -- although, his credibility is already so low that this is likely meaningless.
3. Assuming that we can just "negotiate" out of the war like this, is that good? The White House has usually given 3 objectives (Destroy Iran's navy, destroy their missiles, never nuclear weapons). I think we've got the navy, damaged their missiles, and it's unclear what progress we might make on nukes. Iran's navy seems like the least valuable objective, they can still hold the strait without it, and their navy wasn't a threat otherwise, so... How will stop them from ever getting a nuke if these negotiations are real? Negotiating out of the war seems good to me, but it also seemed bad to me to start the war. I don't get how you could think it was good start and good to end here.

There is no way to get workers to the office at roughly the same time, and home at roughly the same time, without maintaining significant spare capacity. Bus seats, cars, bike sharing, even sidewalks—whatever mode you prefer needs to be built to handle peak flow and that means it will be underutilized much of the time.

This critique of bike sharing is the same nonsense that we hear about “empty seats on buses”. There is not much marginal cost to the surplus capacity, and the capacity means we can handle surges. The low cost of surplus capacity is what makes these modes resilient.

Has anyone tried to quantify this? I'm convinced this is true -- that drivers are more reckless and inconsiderate than pre-COVID -- but I'm mindful that this is the sort of thing that everyone thinks as they proceed through middle age
