@jbarro I think part of it is enforcement. As a teen, I couldn’t get 2 weeks with expired tags without getting pulled. In 2025 I randomly noticed I had forgotten to renew for … a whole year.

Has anyone tried to quantify this? I'm convinced this is true -- that drivers are more reckless and inconsiderate than pre-COVID -- but I'm mindful that this is the sort of thing that everyone thinks as they proceed through middle age
PittsburghPRGuy@PghPRGuy

@jbarro You definitely still see it in the way people drive

the alternative would be no US steel industry. A primary input into so much critical industry must be available domesticky. Same like ship building. Once it goes away it's difficult to bring back. Hence the prices need to be elevated and protected until more steel plants open domesticly to compete

Amazing stuff. Learning by doing. Q: "Why not build a LNG ship here?" A: "The cost of building an LNG ship in Asia is ~$260M. It costs about $1B here." Q: "So why can't shipbuilders just use American steel?" A: "When we put tariffs on imported steel, it drives the prices of steel up. What we know today is that American steel is about twice as much as steel in China." Q: "So what you are saying is when the price of steel goes up because of tariffs, then the American steel manufacturers hike the price of steel? 🤯"

The best thing we can do for our kids right now is to just let them be kids. Kids are getting cell phones sooner than any generation before them, screen times are up while real human connection is down, and foundational skills aren’t being taught enough these days. We need to take a step back. It’s why I just signed a bipartisan bill into law, requiring cursive handwriting to once again be taught in PA public schools. It’s also why I’ve called on the legislature to pass a bill requiring schools to both implement a bell-to-bell cell phone ban and guarantee recess for every Pennsylvania student.  Let’s continue our work to set young people on a path to success — and let our kids be kids.

When the Trump admin pays ZERO political price for waiving the Jones Act, that will be very helpful in showing both parties it’s been a paper tiger this whole time. Not only is there no substantive reason to have the Jones Act, there’s no *political* reason to have it either.
Colin Grabow@cpgrabow

Waiver less than 24 hours old and foreign ships are already being chartered. Each of these voyages represents a cost savings. If cheaper Jones Act-compliant alternatives were available, they would have been used. Shows the existence of demand the JA fleet couldn't meet.

@UrbanCourtyard There are some courtyard developments in Philadelphia where the courtyard is used for parking, and that is a decent design.

@JacobALinker Native Arabs move in their own empire completely legally. The first two Aliyahs Jewish squatters illegally immigrated. During the British period there was uncontrolled immigration that led to chaos, and then when the Brits controlled it they were stabbed in the back by the Jews.

Israel within the 1949 boundaries does approximate who lived where at the time of partition. And given that upwards of 70,000 Jews got displaced in Palestine, both sides did move. Indian partition saw between 10x and 100x as many people die as in Palestine though. And the displaced got way less international humanitarian support.

Remember when the India-Pakistan partition happened and it went perfectly and nobody died and there were zero refugees? Zaid Jilani remembers.

If Jews don't feel safe in America they're going to move to Israel. Those are the two options. They're not moving to an island you never have to think about, and they're not converting to a form of judaism antisemites approve of, it's just here or Israel.

Jews are disproportionately better off on virtually every social indicator and position of power than the median American, and Judaism polls as the religion with the highest approval rating. Antisemitism may make you feel alive but it’s not a real problem for you.
Joe Roberts@Joe_Roberts01

“There is no antisemitism on the left” is the kind of lie people tell when ideology matters more to them than truth. Everyone knows it exists. Everyone. Denying it outright is not principled. It is cynical and cowardly. And it reveals just how little many of these people actually care about Jewish lives.

I am proud to stand with @grahamformaine @ZohranKMamdani & join @hasanthehun feed. The problem is with the neocons in our party who blundered into Iraq, 20 years in Afghanistan, Libya, Gaza, & now support the Iran war. Out with the old guard. We need a new moral direction.
Lily@lilyycohenn

Would love to see more Dems calling out antisemitism on their own side with the same fervor. It starts with admitting how big a problem it is and then revoking all support for Platner, icing out Mamdani, alienating Piker & candidates who join his stream, etc
