@Billybingbong2 @JannyWoman @romfordgeeza In the rare case when this happens (which is called relief at source) you get a refund of the tax from HMRC. 25% gets paid into the pot on top of the contribution and for 40-45% taxpayers the extra comes off your general tax bill at the end of the year.

Given the state pension is £12,500 and the tax free allowance is almost exactly the same amount, surely anyone who has got a second pension or other income is automatically paying tax on it? What am I missing here?

ALSO (and then I promise I'll stop) these are largely for annual passes? Like I bought a yearly pass to the London Transport Museum in 2023 for £25, and then went with my child five-ish (she went free because she was a small child), meaning that it cost about £5 per visit

Is this fair?

@romfordgeeza Yes. When I was 40% tax payer did without some things so could put bit of take home pay into private pension as did not trust gov pension to keep pace with cost of living over many years. Now I gratefully draw money from it every month - the taxed cash I put in is taxed again!

@valhumphreys51 @catherineroyuk @thetimes The trade off is that they don't have general nursing skills or knowledge. I think it does present significant problems to medical teams looking after pregnant women to be honest, though it's not really been explored well.

Another letter to the @thetimes summing up many of the comments I have seen under press articles on maternity care.

🚨🇬🇧 BREAKING: UK’s Vertical Aerospace has achieved a historic aviation milestone, completing a piloted thrustborne transition under the supervision of the UK Civil Aviation Authority in collaboration with EASA, allowing its aircraft to take off vertically and seamlessly transition into wingborne flight, marking a key step toward certified electric aviation and the future of eVTOL air taxis.

@Trellraiser @SanDiegoKnight The person who built the same system at their major competitor was my husband but we’ve since returned to the UK. So now we need to decide between going back to the U.S. or him traveling all the time for meetings and keeping our family (and taxes) UK based.

@Trellraiser @SanDiegoKnight My husband just won the H1B lottery. His company want him in the U.S. so badly that they would rather pay the 100k fee than just wait a few more months to apply for an L1 visa. We are British though.

FY2027 H-1B just CRASHED. Official USCIS data: Registrations: FY24: 759k FY25: 470k FY26: 344k FY27: ~220k 🔥 Selected visas: FY24: 188k FY25: 135k FY26: 120k FY27: ~85-105k (cap) Wage-weighted lottery + higher fees finally slowed the flood. This is what “America First” policy looks like in the data. Sources: → uscis.gov/working-in-the…uscis.gov/newsroom/alert…

@brexitblog_info This isn’t comparable. The triple lock is an annual increase, the cost of the state pension is £138bn this year.

@marydejevsky There’s a difference between protecting an over-inflated pay rise every year and the *entire* pensions of people who contributed to them through their salaries in jobs like doctor, nurse, paramedic. I have a public sector pension and I have to pay 7.5% of my salary towards it.

@NJM71 Duh... a qualifying year of NI contributions. Do a little homework. They even let you 'buy' qualifying years if you haven't accrued enough, for women mainly who had years out of NI payments while pregnant.

I'm tired of hearing ' you don't pay in to' the state pension because if that's true, why do they assess your NI contributing years and then decide how much you get depending on contributions? (PS, I know it isn't a pot - but you do pay in to get it)

Incorrect. It was sold to the British people as a contributory pension. ‘You pay into the pot (the system) and when you retire, you will have an income to live on’ You can’t move the goalposts, now it’s inconvenient for you.
Miriam Cates@miriam_cates

No one has ‘paid into’ the state pension. NI payments are spent by the government of the day, not put into a pot with your name on. Using these terms just perpetuates the myth that the state pension is a contributory scheme. It isn’t. It’s a non-means tested universal benefit paid for by current taxpayers.

@busterrhymes55 @Rab_Naveed @yankeedraft The baby is hardly away from her at all, it’s tight up against her tummy. One of my kids umbilical cords was quite short so I couldn’t really lift them that far. Looks like you can see it anyway

@JeremyLNeufeld I found it odd that they aren’t prioritising the people who will pay the 100k fee… it’s just the same random chance.

The first H-1B Weighted Lottery was just conducted. If they had weighted on compensation instead of seniority, there would have been more visas for graduates of US schools and fewer visas for outsourcers. Hopefully they can revisit this.

Idea for improvement of the H-1B lottery- USCIS just notify the H-1B employee directly when they are selected.
