The SAVE America Act doesn’t “Save” America. And this isn’t about voter ID. This bill requires everyone to re-register to vote in person and your driver’s license, REAL ID, or military ID aren’t even good enough. Imagine all of our seniors who don’t have valid passports and haven’t seen their birth certificates in decades? What about them? How hard will it be for them to register? And how do they get a passport if they can’t find their birth certificates? And what about the cost? If this becomes law, it will disenfranchise many Americans.

I see a lot of women complaining about how difficult it will be to get a Real ID. One woman challenged me directly: “Have YOU ever tried to change your name?” I have not changed my name (it is a pretty cool name). But as an attorney, I have represented many people seeking a name change. It is the easiest thing in the world. You file a petition. The clerk will help. You will get a court date. The judge will ask you a few questions to be sure that the change of name is not intended for fraud. The court grants the petition and enters an order. It’s done. As I said, I have represented people in name changes, but I genuinely feel badly about charging them for something so simple. The going rate is about $100 because I sell my time and it takes 90 minutes or so. But it really is just handing in a couple of forms and attending a brief hearing with a very nice judge whose role it is to help you, not stop you. If that is too difficult for you, you may be too delicate a flower to exist in modern society.

The ID I can use to fly wouldn’t be enough to vote. The SAVE Act is not a voter ID law, it’s voter suppression.
