It's funny how it's so easy to call someone, a racist when they don't even know the back story! My parents were both British and they immigrated to South Africa in the early sixties. They were also very liberal, and they both respected the locals and the way of life they encountered. We were lucky, because they became very wealthy and enjoyed the finer things in life. We employed three housekeepers and a Gardener. Our employees had a 3 bedroom cottage, all on ensuite! with all the normal facilities, their weekly food shop was bought from Woolworths (M&S) over here, and paid very well for their efforts. My Dad bought a car for Simon, (the gardener) so they could get to Doctors appointments or any medical requirements, and all paid for by us. They wanted for nothing and their jobs were secure, no matter what. Along comes the ANC government in 1994, and everything changed. The same individuals we employed for over 40 years, turned against us and became extremely hostile!! Unfortunately South Africa changed dramatically thereafter, and the resentment and hatred became very evident, and that's when we chose to leave South Africa for good. I have never been a racist, but I will say, that trust was lost and self preservation became paramount. My post yesterday confirms just how much separation there is between people of colour in South Africa.
