@FarmerSimonC @farmer_just @e_of_blandings From where did the advice originate? think it became easy to get excited by it - but it’s not really a ‘performance’ indicator - maybe more an ecological state indicator?
Really hard to find any evidence that a higher/‘better’ F:B ratio will deliver greater business benefit

@e_of_blandings Exactly. I'm beginning to think all this advice we have been following to move soils to a higher successional state has been wrong. Fungal:bacteria balance is not what annual crops want, ok if you are trying to grow shrubs or trees but not wheat.

Getting very fed up with rooks digging up every new drilled field. They've been all over this one in 2 days, scratching up long rows. They never go on neighbours' fields or the bits I ploughed last year and this proving they are after insects, but do take seed as well.

Year 3 of our experiment looking at the impacts of rotational grazing on sheep-parasite interactions is complete! Huge amounts of data collected on pasture mass, parasite egg counts, lamb growth & plasma proteins, with a freezer full of samples ready to be attacked over winter…

It’s a great honour to be asked, and they’re often fab events. But
a) you absolutely should not be out of pocket and
b) everyone’s time is valuable - even more so if you’re self employed. The offer of a speaker/contributor fee should be the norm.

I can relate to this. I was asked to travel to speak at an event in the UK some time back. When questioned about travel/accommodation I was told that I'd get a free door ticket in to the event. I'd hardly need to pay to listen to myself! I declined.

Very kindly got asked to speak at a farming conference in Romania last week. When I asked about travel & speaking fees being covered the reply was “we don’t usually pay our speakers” & flights are at your discretion. I declined the invitation, as much as i enjoy presenting I’ve really learnt to value my time etc over the years. It never ceases to amaze me why some event organisers think it’s ok for you to pass on your knowledge for free when people attending have had to pay to go!

The other thing that bothered me was the lack of intramuscular fat in relation to the subcutaneous fat. For good quality beef we need both. So I dug out the weight records for this particular animal and this is how it looks.... 2/

So my "phwoar will you look at the fat on that" picture from the other day has been niggling me. Whilst it is totes poss to fatten a beast on a grass only diet, to finish a beast with that amount of cover at this time of year would be unusual, so I did a bit of digging... 1/

@Farmer_Tom_UK Impressive. I’m not sure inheritance tax exemption is a benefit for the general structure of farm communities.
I have seen what no farm inheritance tax does to other EU countries and I don’t want that in DK. We have inheritance tax (~15%) and it’s alright.
