1/ Matt Goodwin's "Suicide of a Nation" is the 2nd biggest book in Britain. Amazon only. Community Notes confirmed it. But the real story isn't the ranking. It's what's inside the book. 2/ Goodwin told GB News over 1 million people in Britain can't speak English. He said it three times. ONS Census 2021: 161,000. That's 0.3%. The figure he used combines two entirely separate census categories. 3/ He misrepresents pupils with "English as an additional language" status as not speaking English at all. The DfE's own data shows the attainment gap between EAL pupils and English-first peers is at its lowest since 2013. 4/ Then Andy Twelves at The Nerve read the book closely. What he found wasn't spin. It wasn't selective framing. It was claims that don't exist. 5/ Goodwin cites a BBC West Midlands report about schools where children speak 30+ languages, making teaching "almost impossible." Twelves cannot find any evidence this story was ever published. BBC West Midlands doesn't operate in the way Goodwin describes. 6/ Invented or misattributed quotations from: Cicero. Livy. Hayek. Burnham. Noah Webster. Walker Connor. And Sir Roger Scruton — who Goodwin claims was one of his biggest influences. 7/ There's also a false Ofsted inspection report quote. A Bradford classrooms claim that appears nowhere on the internet. Boris Johnson placed in Opposition in 2019 — when he was Prime Minister. 8/ We know Goodwin used ChatGPT while researching this book. The marker "?utm_source=chatgpt.com" appears in several of his references. He says he sees no issue with this "so long as they are cross-checked with the original source." The phantom quotes suggest they weren't. 9/ Twelves offered to debate him publicly — GB News, PoliticsJOE, any broadcaster. Go claim by claim. Source by source. Quote by quote. Goodwin's response to all of this? "Leftwing trolls." 10/ This is a book built on fabricated sources, phantom citations, and AI-generated research — being sold to working class people for their hard-earned money.
