The way and manner we worship this "Democracy" you would think that democracy is a system our ancestors created, polished and perfected to serve the interest of the good people of Nigeria. We defend it jealously and weep when its electoral rituals are violated, and then desperately cling to the delusional fantasy that the next ballot will be the magic wand that finally brings us salvation. Democracy is not indigenous to Nigeria, it was packaged and delivered to us by British Imperialists via gunboats. But today, we have forgotten who built this altar, who wrote the liturgy, and exactly what god this system was designed to serve. When the British realized that they could not sustain direct, brute-force occupation of the vast Nigerian territories, Lord Lugard institutionalized a cheaper and more insidious method of subjugation being "Indirect Rule". The philosophy was simple and straightforward, why should a white man sweat under the scorching African sun, risk being stained with muds,holding a whip when he can elevate a local elite to hold the whip for him? It was this time that the British Imperialists empowered Emirs, manipulated Obas, and where no central kings existed like the Igbo Kingdoms, they audaciously invented "Warrant Chiefs." The job of these native rulers was never to serve their own people. There job was to collect taxes, suppress local dissent, maintain the "peace" for British interests and ensure that the wealth of the land flowed uninterrupted to every Metropolis in London. The native ruler was given just enough power, prestige, and wealth to keep him fiercely loyal to the Crown and entirely disconnected from the plight of his own people. Today, our politicians do not represent the people any more than the Warrant Chiefs represented the Igbo women they taxed into poverty on behalf of their colonial masters. Yet, in spite of all this, we cast votes every four years, believing we are exercising the pinnacle of civic freedom. Mr. Inibehe Effiong; Did you actually take out your time to read the reports from the news you are ruthlessly condemning? When Dangote said: "The Africa free trade will work, but it can only work when the regional markets work." He is actually talking about the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). On paper, this is supposed to be a massive and historic trade agreement meant to facilitate free trade across African nations. The goal here is to allow goods move from Lagos in Nigeria to Nairobi in Kenya without facing crippling tarrifs or border restrictions. However, when Dangote mentioned "Regional markets" he is talking about the sub-regional economic blocs in Africa such as ECOWAS (West Africa), EAC(East Africa), SADC(South Africa). These markets were created decades ago to foster trade between neighbours. So, in essence, Dangote is saying that the beautiful White elephant project meant to promote free trade across different African countries can only work when the regional markets becomes functional. If it takes three weeks and multiple bribes just to move a truck of Dangote Cement from Lagos, Nigeria, to Accra, Ghana (which are in the same regional ECOWAS market), how can continent-wide trade possibly succeed? Now when Dangote talks about these "international interests" sabotaging Africa's growth you have to understand that he's a business tycoon and the richest man in Africa. He knows and understands that, it is legally and financially easier for an African country to trade with Europe or Asia than to trade with the country sharing its border. These are all made possible by the malicious terms and conditions in the World Trade Organisation handbooks. Dangote is in the field and have must have memorized this trading manual for for the sake of his business growths. This is why your whole argument breaks down because these IMF, World Bank, World Trade Organisations did set up these trading rules without a single African present in the boardroom meetings.
