My favorite pet theory is that Tolkien intensely disliked Dune not because of its religious commentary, but that the name Duncan Idaho sent the Oxford Professor who spent his life studying languages into a rage-induced aneurysm.

@achillghost I remember watching a documentary about this and there was a good quote that, oftentimes in U.S. bases out west, the vastness and unhospitable nature of the land itself is the main deterrent for trespassers trying to access it.

There was a famous case of a group of German tourists going missing in Death Valley after their car broke down. They headed for the China Lake military area on their map, assuming it would be a base as in Europe, not realizing it was 4,400 km of uninhabited desert

@CrankyFed I honestly don't have a lot of hope for it. If he intentionally got rid of the "murdering child" as he call her, I have to guess he is not going to be in keeping in the weirder aspects of the book.

If you've seen Denis Villeneuve's Dune movies and have not read the books, I don't think you're prepared for how weird Part 3 is going to be

@325Dino @moriko38 @kgproject2 I meant more of the cliche of a modern professional army being repeatedly "beaten" in their encounters with particular wildlife. The screaming is interesting, reminds me of cougars often causing mistaken reports of a woman being attacked.

Renovation on a bookshop in Guildford, England in 1996,revealed a medieval chamber forgotten beneath the ground for some 700 years. Archaeologists have identified it as a Synagogue dating back to the year 1180. The oldest Synagogue remains on the British Isles.

I'm not going out of my way looking for devils; but I wouldn't step out of my path to let one go by.'" Welcome back to our reread of Howard's Conan. Today's story? Beyond the Black River! I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this one. I'd remembered it fondly, and I recalled several plot details but I didn't know if it would hold up. I don't think this is the best Conan Story, though that would be a tight race. There is some repetitive language and this is probably the 4th or 5th time we've encountered a giant snake in this series. But I believe this just beat out People of the Black Circle for my new favorite. It is, in my humble opinion, the most grounded of all the stories up to this point. It could very well, without the giant snake and a few other fantastic elements, be a historical fiction piece. Especially with the whole conflict in the book resting on government officials pushing land expansion without adequately protecting the people doing the work for them. And, the end is definitely a gut punch. I'd forgotten the fate of Balthus and the existence of Slasher the Dog, and they granted a lot of emotional weight to the piece. Am I saying this story is my favorite because it had a very good boi? No. But I am a sucker for a Good Boi and a Big Darn Hero Moment. For me? 6/5 Good Bois For the average reader 4/5 Ostrich Plume Hats. Next up? Shadows in Zamboula

I thought I was going insane because they were referencing stories which I didn't remember at all but turned out to be the Sprague de Camp publications. They treated them as part of the Howard canon.

They remembered that he was a barbarian." We finally have returned to our re-read of Howard's Conan! Today's story? A Witch Shall Be Born! My perspective is definitely jacked because we just came off of The People of the Black Circle (my new favorite Conan story), but A Witch feels a little like a downgrade. It might be because, despite two engaging scenes (the crucifixion and the Mutiny) it feels like Conan is more an addition to the story rather than a central protagonist. Valerius is almost a dualagonist, which is the first time to occur in the Conan line up. That being said, it's only real crime is proximity. It has unique Villains, Conan becoming more of an active agent in the world at large, and "Thaug" which I swear is the same creature as "Thog" from Slithering Shadow. Anywho, definitely worth reading. 4.5 out of 5 human sacrifices. Next up, Jewel of (Name I struggle to pronounce).
