That’s it. I’m outta here after Elon endorses the White Replacement Theory and Grok undresses women without a response. Twitter was nice while it lasted…

At Our World in Data, we spend much of our time counting deaths. But it’s just as important to know the number of lives saved — even though it is harder to estimate and involves much larger uncertainty. My Data Insight today includes this chart of some estimates.

@kamleshkhunti Are these due to sfx? 15-30pct just don’t tolerate. The paradox is that the demand is immense among people who do not have T2D and do not have obesity plus 4 comorbidities and are buying from the internet Wild West. This is doing harm. I cannot understand how this is legal.

@DJHunter_EPI Co-payment is an issue but we see high discontinuation rates & poor adherence in UK as well despite no co-payments for people with T2 diabetes

@Atul_Gawande @Reuters And nothing says “saving money” like grain rotting in silos, medicines expiring because they can’t be delivered, and scientific studies being stopped before they are completed.

@SashaGusevPosts Important study, but the question of over-diagnosis remains. Ultimately impact on mortality needs to be seen to see if those “missed cancers” were aggressive.

Huge result! Not only did a polygenic risk score identify a large number of participants with prostate cancer, many of them were low risk by conventional guidelines AND had medium/high-risk disease. That has been a hard needle to thread in other cancers.
Alex Strudwick Young@AlexTISYoung

14% of 55-69 men with polygenic risk scores (PRS) in the top 10% had prostate cancer classified as intermediate or higher risk, a higher percentage than would have been identified using PSA or MRI screening. This seems like a strong argument for integrating polygenic risk scores into prostate cancer screening decisions, especially given the very low cost compared to an MRI.

From independent @USAID sources, >800 contracts & awards are being terminated en masse – w the procurement team subject to hourly checks/targets on speed of executing on these terminations. The pace has exceeded the ability to confirm whether lifesaving assistance is affected.

@paulpharoah I’ll see your MR study and raise you one: Went, M., Sud, A., Mills, C. et al. Phenome-wide Mendelian randomisation analysis of 378,142 cases reveals risk factors for eight common cancers. Nat Commun 15, 2637 (2024). doi.org/10.1038/s41467…

@mendel_random A big piece of the answer to your question is that the report is said to be from researchers at “Oxford University and CRUK” - CRUK was the funder but obsessively pumps out press releases in the belief that this increases fund raising.

Why do news outlets keep promoting clickbait dietary epidemiology findings when they’ve been shown to be spurious so often? It was dark chocolate b4 xmas, coffee this morning and milk this evening. ieureka.blogs.bristol.ac.uk
David Spiegelhalter@d_spiegel

Really fed up with ITV News. I did a pre-recorded interview in which I expressed strong scepticism about the 'coffee only good in the morning' story. But they cut all that out, leaving me apparently supporting their credulous story. I really should not be so naive.

@mendel_random Can’t disagree, especially since the coffee morning/all day finding is not a significant interaction just a stratum-specific association. The dairy CRC/association is probably real however - consistent and backed by the lactase persistence MR.

Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, is threatening to unseat elected officials if they do not follow his orders to shut down the government during the holidays. Are we still a democracy or have we already moved to oligarchy and authoritarianism?
