His entire life was shaped around the Holocaust, at 17 he became a partisan and rescued Jews in Yugoslavia and spent the rest of his life keeping the memory of those who perished, his fellow partisans alive

Ivan Vranetić was a young Yugoslav partisan of ethnic Croatian and Catholic background who, at just 17 years old, repeatedly risked his life to save Jewish refugees in occupied Croatia during the Holocaust. Born in Vrbas, in present day Bosnia and Herzegovina, he grew up in the town of Topusko in southern Croatia in a liberal, middle class Catholic family. In September 1943, following Italy’s surrender and the German takeover of Italian occupied territories, Yugoslav Partisans liberated the Rab concentration camp on the Adriatic island. They freed hundreds of Jewish prisoners, along with Slovenian prisoners, and helped them reach partisan controlled areas in mainland Yugoslavia. Many of the women, children, elderly, and infirm were brought to villages in the Topusko region of southern Croatia. Topusko itself was a dangerous place, as a significant portion of the local population supported the Ustaše. From the moment the Jewish refugees arrived, 17 year old Ivica Vranetić stepped in. He befriended them, located safe hiding places in homes and villages, and personally carried children and elderly people on his back, sometimes repeatedly, to get them to safety. He supplied food and basic necessities, warned them of approaching battles or German raids, escorted them to new shelters, and looked after them during transit. One dramatic incident occurred when a rumour spread that German forces were nearing. A group of Jews panicked and fled in the wrong direction, straight toward Ustaše controlled territory. Vranetić, worried for their lives, searched for two hours until he found them and guided them back to safety. His actions came at a heavy personal cost. In one early encounter, he tried to protect a Jewish doctor from being harassed by Ustaše soldiers. The soldiers turned on him instead, beating him so severely that he permanently lost hearing in his left ear. Undeterred, he continued his rescue work. Among those he saved was Erna, also called Arna, Montilio, a young Jewish woman whose husband had been murdered at the Jasenovac concentration camp. Erna arrived with her small daughter and her elderly mother, and, according to some accounts, her sister. Vranetić found them a secure hiding place and ensured their ongoing safety as they moved between refuges amid battles between German forces and partisans. Erna later told Yad Vashem, I could have never survived with an old mother and a little girl without his help. In 1970, Yad Vashem recognised Ivan Vranetić as Righteous Among the Nations for his selfless heroism. In 1986, he was elected chairman of the Organization of Righteous Among the Nations in Israel, a position he held for more than two decades.

In 1940, Stalin ordered the NKVD to murder 22,000 Polish military officers held as POWs after the Soviet invasion of Poland in 1939. Many were murdered and buried in secret mass graves in the Katyń Forest, giving it the name “Katyń Massacre”…

Dobře to dopadlo! 👍🏻

@mandyarthur @grok Jews, like most people in the world by the way, have not used surnames (family names). In my country, the former Habsburg Empire, Emperor Joseph II required Jews to choose German sounding surnames in 1787. Later, similar laws were passed in other countries, including Russia.

WW2 The Eastern Front
WW2 The Eastern Front@ShoahUkraine·
We are exactly 30 days away from Victory Day over Germany. Starting now, I will make a post every day explaining where things stood on the Eastern Front on that specific day, leading all the way up to Victory Day. On April 9, 1945, the Eastern Front was in its final phase, with the Red Army holding overwhelming superiority and the German defenses on the verge of total collapse. The Soviets had already completed their massive winter offensives (Vistula-Oder in January-February and follow-on operations in Pomerania, Silesia, and East Prussia). They had advanced hundreds of kilometers, liberated most of Poland, cleared much of the Baltic coast, and stood on German soil along the Oder and Neisse rivers, just 60-90 km from Berlin. German forces were shattered, with depleted divisions, heavy reliance on Volkssturm militia and Hitler Youth, failed counteroffensives ( Operation Solstice and Spring Awakening), and isolated pockets being mopped up. Key Event on April 9: Fall of Königsberg The most significant action that day was the capture of Königsberg (now Kaliningrad), the heavily fortified capital of East Prussia. After a prolonged siege as part of the East Prussian Offensive (January-April 1945), the final Soviet assault began on April 6 with massive artillery and air bombardment. On April 9, the German garrison under General Otto Lasch surrendered after four days of intense urban fighting involving multiple Soviet armies attacking in a " star-like " pattern from north, south, and northeast. Roughly 80,000-90,000 Germans were captured (plus heavy civilian losses), with the city largely destroyed. The Red Army forces involved: Primarily the 3rd Belorussian Front (commanded in its final phase by Marshal Aleksandr Vasilevsky, with elements under General Hovhannes Bagramyan/1st Baltic Front coordination), including the 11th Guards Army, 39th, 43rd, and 50th Armies, supported by heavy artillery (up to 250 guns/km in places), armor, engineers, and multiple air armies plus Baltic Fleet aviation. This victory eliminated the last major German pocket in East Prussia (only the Samland Peninsula group remained, which was wiped out later in April). It freed up substantial Soviet forces, particularly allowing Marshal Konstantin Rokossovsky’s 2nd Belorussian Front to redeploy westward to the Oder River, securing the northern flank for the upcoming Berlin Offensive. The Vienna Offensive The Vienna Offensive (April 2-13, primarily involving elements of the 2nd and 3rd Ukrainian Fronts) was in its final stages. Soviet forces were advancing deep into Austria; Vienna itself would fall on April 13. Other ongoing actions included the long siege of Breslau (Wrocław) in Silesia (still holding out until early May) and minor mopping-up in Pomerania and elsewhere. No major new offensives launched exactly on April 9 besides the Königsberg climax. Overall Strategic Condition The Eastern Front was essentially won by the Soviets. German Army Groups Vistula and Centre were fragmented and outmatched. Hitler’s high command was issuing unrealistic " stand fast " orders while the Red Army massed about 2.5 million troops, over 6,000 tanks, and 41,000+ artillery pieces for the Berlin assault (scheduled to begin April 16 with a massive barrage and searchlight illumination). Logistics favored the Soviets heavily after their rapid winter advances. The capture of Königsberg on April 9 removed the last significant distraction in the north, allowing full concentration on Berlin and linking up with Western Allies farther west. The war in Europe had weeks, not months, left.

If President Trump lets the Iranians charge a toll for ships in the Strait of Hormuz, then every time you fill up your car at the pump, you will put money straight in the pockets of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. This would be a humiliating disaster for the US.
Jonathan Karl@jonkarl

This morning, I asked President Trump if he’s okay with the Iranians charging a toll for all ships that go through the Strait of Hormuz, he told me there may be a Joint US-Iran venture to charge tolls: “We’re thinking of doing it as a joint venture. It’s a way of securing it — also securing it from lots of other people.” “It’s a beautiful thing”

It makes no sense to teach this German scum that in prewar Czechoslovakia, German kids could, and did, attend German language school up to university level. Something the Russian kids in the Baltics are not allowed even in 2026. Instead of studying history, people read trash.
Kaiser@eagleeye2805

You Czech and Polak Chihuahua nationalists will soon have your comeuppance 😄❤️. You treated your German minorities like shit post WW1 and you committed mass genocide and ethnic cleansing post WW2: 12-14 million German civilians expelled, mostly women, children, and elderly, of whom 1.2-2.0 million were often brutally killed. You are not better than us.
