@DanielGJaffe

This complements my personal account, and is for those who prefer tweets on music and my work. Currently researching Gustav Holst. Opinions my own.

@kmcannon @musicandroots @amwilson_opera b) you’ve a snowball’s chance in hell understanding its content, assuming you can even manage to read the content. In my field, that’s even before considering if AI could make sense of a composer’s sketch book.

@kmcannon @musicandroots @amwilson_opera I guarantee AI would be shit at deciphering hastily hand written letters that require a) detailed knowledge of the circles the writer moved in (generally a level of detail even doorstop thick biographies skimp over), before 1/2

There are PhDs being handed out each day to people living in the past: the students, their advisors, their universities. Dissertations that took 5 years of work, and which 4.6 Opus could re-produce then improve on in an afternoon.

@_stroak @RichardBratby A time, it appears, when producers assumed that there were people who aspired to learn more or were at least curious - rather than today’s assumption that viewers and listeners merely want their own assumptions confirmed or reinforced.

@RichardBratby I watched “Face The Music” (1976) on BBC4 tonight and the absurdity of such a highbrow programme, from 50 years ago, ever being made for what must’ve been a minority audience even then struck me immediately. That they did so is marvellous, it wouldn’t ever be considered now.

If you were to ask me who was the 21st century equivalent of Robert Robinson, I could not tell you. I simply cannot think of one. That is how far we have fallen.

Can report that, at the fever-dream stage of proper flu, watching Weapons is a very, very bad idea.

Sometimes I put on Vaughan Williams and it speaks so profoundly. The textures and colours, not to mention the character(s) you encounter in Job are truly individual. No wonder Holst so believed in his friend and encouraged him in this work.

I had a productive meeting with OUP today. They are working hard to get more copies printed and flown over from the US. Nevertheless, the logistics of these things take time. So again, if you want a copy for someone for Christmas, I strongly suggest you order it right now!

SOMEONE ELSE’S MUSIC: Opera and the British by @amwilson_opera is out now! Essential reading for anybody who wants to understand the debates we are having today in the UK about arts funding, accessibility, and who the opera is ‘for’. Order now: shorturl.at/sfWvs

Just heard that Raymond Head has died. He was one of the foremost scholars in Holst research - certainly for all his groundbreaking research into Holst’s involvement in Sanskrit and astrology. He was both a generous and honest colleague - we shall all miss him.

AI makes up nonsense. The Duchess of Kent could not have studied Music and French at the Queen's College Oxford because a) that is not a combination offered and b) Queen's was all male then. Yet this has been picked up in press obits.

Europa 2025.

»Gustav Holst: Sāvitri« in the international @operamagazine: "This new studio recording—on a album filled up by Holst songs—with a mostly German cast and ensemble, conducted by Klaus Simon, is surely one of the very best now available." Complete review: opera.co.uk/issues/februar…

Productions such as #PeterGrimes will basically be a thing of the past. They will become occasional events, necessitating bringing in a great many freelancers only temporarily to swell the performing ranks. But a far cry from @WelshNatOpera as we know and love it. #SaveWNO

Another round of applause to the @AppleClassical product team. This listening guide feature is so slick. This might be the most thoughtfully produced music app on the market.

“In the hour or so I’ve been using Classical version 2.2, I’ve learned more about classical music than in my entire life. Seeing a description and hearing the exact thing in real time is huge!” audiophilestyle.com/ca/bits-and-by…

After months toiling over Listening Guide, Apple Music Classical’s new feature launched earlier this week, lovely to get this review: “In the hour or so I’ve been using [LG], I’ve learned more about classical music than in my entire life.” Full review next.
