Steam Frame may have just had one of its biggest concerns clarified: IPD range. • Reddit user says they emailed Valve directly about Steam Frame IPD • Concern was around the physical 60-70mm adjustment range • Valve allegedly said the pancake optics are designed to support a wider usable range • Reddit OP claims the eyebox should support around 52-76mm • This matters for people with lower or higher IPD • Could make Steam Frame more comfortable for a wider audience • The email also mentions possible tech press discussions coming up • Still not a full official public announcement, so take it carefully This is a big deal if true. A lot of VR headsets lose people immediately when the IPD range is limited, especially if you are under 60mm or above the normal range. If Valve’s pancake optics give Steam Frame more usable clarity outside the physical adjustment range, that could calm down a lot of concerns.

@ThrowawayA55057 @baldlyrudy I’ve been using an index for years now but I can’t help but wonder how big the difference with pancake lenses is. My headset has always had the smallest sweet spot ever so if pancake lenses are as big of an improvement as people say, I’m never going back to fresnel.

@baldlyrudy Not day one, but the PSVR2 is going to be pretty close to frame competing for my attention. Especially those OLEDs. OLED version with a Snapdragon 8 Elite would absolutely dethrone the PSVR2 though, no doubt about it.

@baldlyrudy I’m curious as to where this “13 ton” number came from. Based on the import records I read, it seems more like 31 tons (31.929 to be exact).

@RealSharpenIron @NathieVR The headset + controllers weigh about 700g (valve’s website lists their weight). The dongle + charger + packaging probably bring it up to around 1kg. Also, I’m not sure where they got the 13 ton number from, the actual number from the import records is around 31 tons.

@NathieVR Assuming this includes the entire kit, and the weight of the controllers is similar to the Index Knuckle controllers, this only puts the Steam Frame box at about 14,174 units.

Valve seems to be gearing up to launch Steam Frame soon.

1. If they were Steam Frames, that would only be around 20,000 units at best, and even fewer if it were Steam Machines. So it’s definitely Steam Controllers. 2. I feel comfortable saying that because I woke up this morning to my reservation.
