Its name comes from literary critic William Morris, who used the term to describe *my* fiction (I'm not saying he coined the term for me, I'm saying this is where I first heard it). It means popular art that low brow in form, e.g. genre fiction, but contains elevating elements. I've heard Neal Stephenson describe novels in this space as rollicking adventure tales that also contain big ideas. So on High Low Brow, I'll be talking about the books, music, TV shows, graphic novels, and visual art that I like. I'll interview people who make that art and people who like. High Low Brow. I’m going to anger people with this comment, but at nearly 50 years old, I have never read the Lord of the Rings. I struggled through the Hobbit, but couldn’t do LotR. That said, Dave did great in this episode talking about the ’magic’ and how the ‘real’ wild influenced the story. I’ll probably still never make it through the books, but I really should rewatch the movies. Go give his new show a listen.

The state of academia is bad. Really bad. My son, currently finishing his last two years of college on the GI Bill, had to sit through a lecture given by a professor who wept, apologizing for the fact that his grandfather who fought in WWII hadn't been killed and that his uncle, who served in Vietnam also survived. The professor then enlightened the class by declaring that military service automatically made you evil. 😠
