They did talk of building one once but in the end the settled for the channel tunnel which is approximately 31 miles in length going under the channel, comprising 3 tunnels, 2 train tunnels and 1 service and emergency tunnel. Took 6 years to build between France and Britain using giant tunnel boring machines.
