Doctors should neither advise parents of 13 year olds to play football NOR avoid football. The net effect of the activity is unknown. Doctors should shut up about things they don't know, and journals should focus on medicine not parenting nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…

It’s not what we owe NFL players, who are adults. It’s what we owe youth and high school players, who lack the same medical care – and make up the vast majority of the game. Start with an athletic trainer in every school that offers the game. Advocate for that, where you live.
