It’s striking how some people could see the reasons pronouns were introduced into organisations, while other, supposedly sophisticated, people were completely oblivious to their iniquity. The difference is that some of us read history and recognised it as a much-used bullying tactic of control. One feature that all totalitarian regimes have in common is an enforced adherence to the concept of joy. Cults are the same. The over-the-top public displays of joy are a giveaway. Do this and there will be joy. Don’t do this and you’re ruining the grand vision for everyone and must be punished. I didn’t adhere to the smiley, happy consensus in the City of Armadale about LGBTQ+ and transgenderism (among management at least — the majority of staff never believed the nonsense). I just unobtrusively didn’t use preferred pronouns. It wasn’t until management decided to show me how uninformed I was about the philosophy — by forcing me to undergo what can only be described as a propaganda training session and change my allegedly evil ways (remember: those reprobates who don’t follow the script are destroying the joy), that I said I would not do Diversity, Equity and Inclusion training — which Human Resources described as a ‘reasonable’ request. Management, of course, had read my articles and had been told by transgender zealots that I was an apostate to the dream of a new world; the world where feelings trump empirical reality. When I told my manager that I would not do the DEI training she immediately walked to the only transgender person in the library service and said ‘he won’t do the training’. But of course there was no systematic collusion among Human Resources, library management or the transgender zealots among staff to force me to conform to their ideology. It was just a reasonable request. Did you know C.S. Lewis predicted the modern obsession with “being nice” would destroy the soul? In The Abolition of Man, Lewis argues that when a society stops believing in objective virtue, it doesn’t become tolerant… it becomes manipulable. He calls the result “men without chests.” People with appetites and intellects, but no courage, no honor, no trained moral instincts. They can calculate everything and defend nothing. Lewis saw that once we reject inherited moral law, we don’t become free. We become raw material… easily shaped by propaganda, pleasure, and fear. Modern man prides himself on compassion while quietly surrendering every standard that once gave compassion meaning. Lewis’s insight is brutal: a civilization that educates clever cowards will eventually be ruled by tyrants or technicians. Because when nothing is worth dying for, everything becomes negotiable… including human dignity.

In my career defending academic freedom and free speech, I never saw anything become as immediately radioactive as views that ran counter to the narrative on trans issues. Papers were retracted, compelled speech was treated as normal, and people were canceled for saying things that would have sounded like common sense just a few years earlier. This is a great essay. Related to its central thesis is the point I've often made, that resolving the trans nonsense simply requires everyone to do their job on this the same way they do on everything else. Politicians, journalists, health professionals, sports regulators, teachers, academics - all should treat the counterfactual claim that some men are actually women and some women are actually men in the same way as they would treat any other counterfactual claim. Mostly that would mean saying "You do you, but that's not relevant to policy-making/ sports policy or whatever." With kids it would include saying "we can't play along with that because we have to be clear about everyone's sex in order to keep children safe." In healthcare it would mean "we don't provide treatments that aren't based on some relevant understanding of aetiology and that there is zero reason to think would work." Just do your one job, people. Stop treating this silly idea as an exception.

I'm glad this talk went ahead, but don't recognise my alma mater. Since its inception UCL has been on the side of rationality, not ideology, of inclusion, not religious or sectarian tests. That a woman needs protection to talk about women's rights and free speech is shameful.

It is now exactly one year since I last worked — the end of February 2025. Centrelink rejected my JobStart application (it’s complicated), so I have no income and I’ve emptied my two primary bank accounts. Recently, I’ve accessed my savings account (something I hadn’t intended to do until I retired), which I hope will fund me for a year (a year and a half at most). After that, I will have to access my superannuation, which, hopefully, will keep me going until I retire in four years. Then I’ll have to rely on the pension to survive, with all that entails — most likely poverty, in other words. I applied for a number of library jobs, but I wasn’t interviewed. I’ve heard through the library grapevine that I’m probably blacklisted. I can’t apply for many other jobs (the hours have to be exactly right and I’m limited in what I can do) because I have a longstanding health issue that worsened due to stress after my forced resignation from the City of Armadale. I’m now, for the first time, on permanent medication (stress triggers ‘flares’ that exacerbate the condition). Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (and its subset, Transgenderism) leave a trail of destruction in their wake, and the people who push this ideology are not moral individuals, no matter how much they claim to ‘Be Kind’, pose smiling in photographs, or dress in motley. Excessive and irrational empathy — precluding ideological malice as a motivation — destroys justice and reason. My current (and future) situation occurred because I had a different opinion on the subject of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and its impact on science, justice, liberal democracy, women’s rights, and free speech compared to the transgender/DEI zealots among a minority of library staff and the management of the City of Armadale. Ideologues live among us, and they’ve captured our institutions. Never let them tell you that Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is a completely positive ideology.
