Home โ€“ the place where everything begins. On Earth Day, we celebrate our extraordinary home and all the wonderful, wild creatures with whom we share it. For Earth isn't ours alone โ€“ it is one shared home for all life. Yet human actions are placing unprecedented strain on our planet, destroying habitats and endangering creatures big and small. We may be the driving force behind the challenge, but we can also be the solution. Here in Kenya, we work to make our corner of the world a stronger, safer place for all creatures. The news can be disheartening, and we cannot turn our backs on the havoc we are wreaking. Still, we see cause for optimism โ€“ animals beating the odds to survive, species returning from the brink, entire habitats regenerating. Our planet is resilient. Every living being deserves a safe place to call home โ€“ and Mother Earth can provide that, if we allow her to. Thank you, our supporters, for helping us protect it. If you are in a position to give, please donate in honour of Earth Day: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/donate

Give A Shit About Nature
Give A Shit About Nature@giveashitnatureยท
Most people who plant flowers for pollinators forget one thing. Bees need water. A bee that lands on the edge of your pool to drink is a dead bee. They can't swim. A standard birdbath is a drowning trap. Bees use water for more than drinking. They cool the hive with it. They feed it to larvae. Mason bees need it to make mud to seal their nest chambers. Some species make 80 water trips a day during nest-building. When natural water disappears, they end up in pools, ditches, and pesticide runoff. The pollinator garden you built isn't complete until you give them somewhere safe to drink.

The largest marine heat wave in the world is lapping at the California coast and shattering ocean temperature records in the northeast Pacific. It will have major implications for Californiaโ€™s weather โ€” supercharging spring storms, setting the stage for an active North American monsoon and Pacific hurricane season, and potentially harming marine plants and animals that are accustomed to the cool, nutrient-rich water typical of the current that runs down the California coast. Summer may feel warmer and muggier than usual in Los Angeles, and perhaps even in San Francisco โ€” a stark contrast to 2025, which was notably cool and foggy along the California coast. More Sierra Nevada thunderstorms are possible by the middle of summer as a result of an enhanced monsoon. The marine heat wave first reached Californiaโ€™s shoreline in September and shrank in fall, a pattern typical of the past decade, said Andy Leising, a research oceanographer at the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. Then, however, it swelled again in December โ€” an unusual occurrence, Leising said. This week, the exceptionally warm waters extended from San Francisco to central Mexico, south of Hawaii to the equator and beyond the International Date Line. Sea temperatures were most anomalous from Point Conception (Santa Barbara County) to around Cabo San Lucas, Mexico meeting the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administrationโ€™s criteria for a โ€œstrongโ€ to โ€œsevereโ€ marine heat wave.

USGS Water Resources
USGS Water Resources@USGS_Waterยท
Every day is Earth Day at USGS! ๐ŸŒ If every drop of water on, in, and above the Earth was gathered into a single ball, it would be surprisingly small compared to the planet. While 71% of Earthโ€™s surface is covered by water, that represents only a thin layer. So how much water is there on Earth? ๐Ÿ’ง 96.5% is saline water in oceans ๐Ÿ’ง 2.5% is found as freshwater ๐Ÿ’ง 30% of the freshwater is stored in the ground ๐Ÿ’ง 69% of that freshwater is stored in glaciers and ice caps ๐Ÿ’ง about 1% is accessible in lakes and rivers Earth's water supply is finite and constantly moving through the water cycle. Understanding why the tiny sphere of water shown is critical helps put Earth Day into perspective. While water is abundant, easily accessible freshwater is a scarce, precious resource that is the lifeblood of our planet. Learn more about water on Earth at the USGS Water Science School: ow.ly/e4oy50YJP3M ๐Ÿ“ท: Data visualization showing how much total water there is on Earth and in oceans, frozen water, groundwater, and lakes and rivers.
