When CBS News laid her off in February, they didn’t just let her go. Herridge had been working with sources to expose government corruption and misconduct. A major American news network confiscated a journalist’s confidential files — the kind of records that exist specifically to protect whistleblowers — and the sources who trusted her with information about government wrongdoing went into hiding because they feared retaliation. Herridge had already been held in 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐭 for refusing to reveal her sources on a national security story. She’s been fighting in federal court for 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 and now faces fines of $𝟖𝟎𝟎 𝐚 𝐝𝐚𝐲 for protecting those sources. She told the committee one of her children recently asked her “𝘪𝘧 𝘐 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘨𝘰 𝘵𝘰 𝘫𝘢𝘪𝘭, 𝘪𝘧 𝘸𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘧 𝘸𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘧𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘺 𝘴𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘮𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘴.” She said she wanted to tell her child it was impossible — but couldn’t.
