Thunderstorms need warm, humid air and a large temperature drop with altitude. The Pacific coast has neither. Seattle meteorologists get excited if a storm top reaches 20,000 feet. In Florida, they routinely hit 50,000. The entire map is basically a humidity gradient. The Gulf of Mexico acts as a warm moisture pipeline feeding the Southeast, while cold Pacific currents shut the West Coast down. That band of orange across the Great Plains? Warm Gulf air colliding with cold Canadian fronts along the jet stream, the same collision physics at continental scale. Florida gets a thunderstorm roughly every 3.5 days. Los Angeles gets one every 36.
