The Police Annual Report: How do Private security organizations contribute to the fight against crime in Uganda? 📍 The threat to global terrorism and its manifestations has led to many public offices, business, leisure, tourism and travel to rethink about public security to private security measures. 📍Rapid growth of urban population and private business. 📍The covid -19 pandemic effects such as having fewer people at work places renders some corporations, companies, firms, offices look deserted. This increases risks for attacks. 📍Even at work places, the risk to spread the disease requires orderliness and adherence to SOPs. This requires security. 📍With the liberalization of Uganda’s economy in the 1990’s a lot of private property was acquired by individuals and private organizations. Crime increased in such an environment and the need to protect lives and property intensified. Fear of crime has driven the demand for private security services. 📍Companies using private security firms, have had lesser chances of being victims of burglary. 📍With low police population ratio, coupled with inadequate resources in UPF, it was found necessary to relinquish functions of guard, escourt etc that could be done by private groups. 📍Effective and reliable workplace security is very important to any business because it reduces insurance, compensation, liabilities, and other expenses that the company must pay to its stakeholders, ultimately leading to increased business revenue and reduction in operational charges incurred. 📍Private security supports the growth of national governments in improvements of national security. The state security agencies are left to take care of overall security of life and property including internal and external threats. 📍Lastly, the PSOs should begin to send their reports to the CID indicating what crimes they have prevented, averted and criminal suspects apprehended & handed over to the police. If this is done, police will capture the hitherto uncaptured reports, give more support to the private security sector eg renting them more firearms which are very expensive on the open markets & stimulate officers to begin to credit PSOs and respect their contribution. As of now, there’s no love list between the two security institutions. If anything goes wrong at a site guarded by PSOs, the way guards are treated is pathetic. 📍We all need to work and support each other to bring these crimes even much lower. 📍Many thanks to the @igp_ug1, @Tom_Magambo @AigpDamulira and the entire @PoliceUg leadership for the good job well done. 📍My one cent contribution. 📸 @dennis_kabugo
