Most crypto exchanges will onboard millions of new users this year.
And quietly lose most of them during KYC. 🔴
Not to competitors. Not to market conditions. To a loading screen that says "verification pending" with zero context.
We ran 100 polls 14,877 votes, 2,841 verified participants specifically on exchange onboarding, verification, and support. What we found should make every exchange product team uncomfortable.
The Winner Swap Nobody Wants to See:
Exchanges assume users quit because they're afraid of sending funds to the wrong address. So they build better transfer flows, cleaner UIs, more confirmations.
The users already left. During KYC. They never saw the transfer screen.
The Data That Hurts:
→ 29% of users lose trust in a pending verification within just 15 minutes of silence
→ Fees appearing after signup is the only finding across 100 polls where every single segment agreed it's your #1 trust killer
→ 50.4% of users consciously keep low balances because withdrawal holds feel unpredictable. Your retention problem is also a revenue problem.
What the top 3 fixes actually are:
1️⃣ Tell users what's happening during verification silence is interpreted as failure
2️⃣ Show fees before users commit not after, not buried, before
3️⃣ Publish your withdrawal hold rules unpredictability is costing you deposits
The finding nobody in this space is talking about:
Users don't hate chatbots. They hate feeling trapped in one. One visible "connect to a human" button with an estimated wait time produced the study's largest preference gap of 14.1pp.
That's it. That's the fix.
The exchanges that close these gaps first don't just retain users they inherit the ones that competitors keep losing.
