@James_Saye @rorysutherland People have been trained for so long to believe that house prices only ever go up. It is painful to realise you might have to sell at a loss. It feels like it is against some sort of natural order of things.

@rorysutherland As someone who’s currently on the market I can tell you many sellers are completely delusional. Viewed some that have been on for 6-12 months and they won’t accept reasonable offers because they spent £50k on the kitchen extension 5 years ago and want their money back.

Credit though, she does say “dropped his phone in the Thames and pretended it was stolen”, which is what people are saying happened. She isn’t making out like everyone thinks he hired a ninja assassin to rob him in the street, which is what the rest of these lads are saying.
BBC Radio 4 Today@BBCr4today

"Morgan McSweeney ... has become a sort of bogeyman. People are imagining all sorts of amazing things that he can do." Helen MacNamara, former deputy cabinet secretary, addresses comments made at PMQs yesterday suggesting the former No10 chief of staff 'would pretend' his phone was stolen.

@RanTeeThree @stewybabe30 @rorysutherland My own view is that good agencies need both people who get excited and enthusiastic about every fad, and grumpy cynics who say "What is this and why should anyone care?". You need both types, but a prevailing culture of tech boosterism means grumpy cynics are often less valued.

@stewybabe30 @rorysutherland Only 8% of the workforce in agencies is over 51 years old. They forget that we have seen many fads come and go.

@flying_rodent I love that the big-brained political analysts on both sides of the Atlantic still think repeatedly telling people "It is time to move on" is going to work.

@flying_rodent As a middle class professional, most of the people I am friendly enough to talk politics with seem to be in a position where they really don't want to vote either Tory or Labour. Those people have got to go somewhere. It isn't rocket science.

Speaking as a lower middle class graduate with an office job and a mortgage, born in the late seventies, I would say: this is half my social circle and most of the people I worked with for years. How in the name of Christ did nobody in politics or media see this coming?

@dieworkwear And the argument that shame and humility are the only things holding you back, is actually what a lot of those influencers who are getting rich are selling.

shame and humility are essentially the only thing stopping you from being rich given the absolute bullshit you can spin online nowadays.

my impression is that it's very easy to make money online so long as you're willing to be a boastful, ego-centric bullshitter and sell sham products to a growing fan base. you can easily be a millionaire this way. and perversely, this wealth only earns you more credibility

There is a lot in the news about energy bills. I want to reassure people that Ofgem's price cap is fixed from April to the end of June and will not change. Families will see lower bills thanks to our actions at the Budget. 1/2

@rorysutherland But jokes by interns shouldn't get put out as news, surely? The older example is a harmless joke. The recent example is a supposedly serious news outlet publishing fake rage-bait. Even if a joke, that is embarrassing.

An incredible retraction by the Daily Telegraph today. They have apologised for publishing an article last year headlined: “We earn £345k, but soaring private school fees mean we can’t afford to go on five holidays.” The entire story was fabricated; the family did not exist.

@rorysutherland They would need a much more dynamic approach to cleaning and turning around rooms, with more hours/cost. Could be done, but would only make sense if demand and price ppl willing to pay outstripped the costs. Most hotels, even nice ones, are terrified about margins.

The price by the night model is probably outdated. You should be able to book hotel rooms "by the hour" for non sexual purposes. Provided people were prepared to commit to an arrival and departure time in advance, it could work.
Dandanmusicman 🎶@dandanmusicman

@rorysutherland Rory there is definitely a gap in the market for a hotel letting you check in at noon. Most places seem to be 3pm these days. I just booked an LA hotel which Is 4pm check in! If hotels gave you a cheaper room to be vacated by 9 or 10am, many people would take that option.
