@JenniferRidgway @mongrelcelt @rorysutherland Similar houses all around them going for 50-100k less than theirs. I’m guessing they’re mortgaged up to their eye balls.
English

@JenniferRidgway @mongrelcelt @rorysutherland We viewed one, couple going through a divorce need a quick sale, estate agent told us they would refuse anything that wasn’t 10k above asking… just ridiculous. Has been on for over 6 months now.
English

@FunkyCroydon @rorysutherland And people believe, incorrectly, that you always make your money back on renovations.
English

@James_Saye @rorysutherland People have been trained for so long to believe that house prices only ever go up. It is painful to realise you might have to sell at a loss. It feels like it is against some sort of natural order of things.
English

@ashridgepf On the flip side we’ve viewed houses to buy, in a different market, that have been on for 12 months. One estate agent was so exasperated with their seller they basically said don’t even bother viewing it, they won’t accept anything like a realistic offer.
English

@ashridgepf We live in a commuter town just outside London, house went on the market Saturday, 10 viewings booked within 2 days. Estate agent even offered us a 1 week contract they’re so sure it’ll sell immediately. There’s definitely a market for the right property in the right location.

@lukeknight @_sonith The Wine Society are good. If you’re in London, there’s far better though.
English

@James_Saye @_sonith I like wine. I go to some Wine Society tastings
English

Coffee on me if someone in London can teach me about the thing they’re obsessed about.
Anything - tennis, history, fine dining etc. Literally anything that you’re uniquely obsessed about.
DM me. An hour on the weekend is perfect.
I’m going @_sonith style
English

@robhawkes You will enjoy it. We have full 16 panel solar plus battery and over a 12 month period we export almost double our own usage. Solar really does work and pays for itself.
English

@TimurNegru I’m sure you’ll have a great time, some things that stick in my mind:
- Outside of fancy or hyper local restaurants the food is mostly slop.
- Bars are great with good selection.
- Most places are extremely unwalkable.
- Everyone is friendly and chatty.
- Tipping is crazy.
English

I’m a European about to fly to America for the first time. I’ve been told to prepare for:
- Airport the size of a small country
- Someone aggressively welcoming me to have a great day
- A sandwich that costs $24
- Tipping at the airport. At the airport.
- XXXL portion sizes
Will report back.

@tomfgoodwin I’m convinced that the absolute worst thing OpenAI did was start with a free tier that provided everything that 99% of people need. Set the baseline that AI should be free and now it’s going to be destroyed by shitty ads.
English

@levelsio @PierreDeWulf A lot of the locals move to London or Paris for the summer. They fly their car over too, Europe is full of UAE and Saudi license cars in the summer.
English

@PierreDeWulf Yes, I think many people that live in Dubai have a second spot they go when it gets too hot
Kinda like Austin ppl go to Italy then
English

First time in Dubai, it feels like the hybrid of Singapore energy but with bad US urban planning.
Young people from all countries and cranes everywhere.
It's probably what happens when a country wants to build instead of debating permits for 25 years like 🇫🇷.
The city seems organized into small areas, where inside the areas you can kind of walk around, but to go from one area to another is almost impossible without a car.
I am seriously impressed by the food and hotel quality. I expected Las Vegas level, but it was more on par with Japan. Way more expensive though.
If it weren't 45°C outside 4 months a year, I think I could take the leap and try to live there.
inb4: "but this is easy with oil money" -> only 1% of GDP of Dubai is coming from oil.

English

@GjMcGowan Every time someone says AI is going to take over I just think about the Covid-era stuff I still see about, which reminds me how slow organisations are to change.
English

I need to do a little blog post on why I don’t expect progress in ~all other white collar work to be as fast as in software engineering

English

@GjMcGowan Will be probably get hate for this but Monday and Friday in the office are the best days. Maybe add a Thursday too.
English

Let’s go back to 5 days in the office when the old perks also come back:
- proper expense accounts for lunches and after work drinks and dinners
- proper expenses and time codes for travel for in person meetings
- laptop gets left at the office at the end of the day.
