@GaryJMatthews @FionaSmall the leprechaun is a solely irish figure. the vampire, even in the 1890s, was an eastern european figure. it’s more likely he took inspiration from carmilla and the vampyre than “the origin and history of irish names of places” wouldn’t you think?

@hvsperus @FionaSmall There's also the Irish legend of the Abhartach, and undead creature that drinks blood. I suppose that had nothing to do with it either, or would you only acknowledge the Irishness if the villain was a Leprechaun?

@hvsperus @FionaSmall It's something they experienced in Ireland that would never have been in the book otherwise. That's an Irish connection. Supplementary to the question being argued here, whether or not the author (a person who was born and lived his early life in Ireland) is Irish

@hvsperus @FionaSmall Oh I suppose the part where they had to flee a mysterious death that came from a ship and were hounded by a torch welding mob led by a doctor had nothing to do with it.

@GaryJMatthews @FionaSmall not really, it was just some medical academic who wrote an article on it a while back and all the irish tabloids jumped on it. that interpretation is like “is iago gay” but that’s actually compelling analysis

Ricky Gervais Roasts Bob Geldof Live on BBC… Then Gets Hit With a Brutal Grammy Clapback Gervais was asked about going to the Grammys and casually replied that it was enough effort just getting dressed up for The One Show. He then turned to Bob Geldof and delivered the roast: “I usually get accused of being scruffy on telly, but I knew Bob was on, so the pressure’s off.” 😂 Bob didn’t hold back and fired back: “Hilarious hey? He’s a comedian. Grammy nominated, by the way. Some people on this couch have a Grammy already.” Ricky’s response: “Do you really? Oh… that is annoying. That is annoying. That is annoying.”

I’ve noticed something about some fans who want Michael Carrick permanently at Manchester United. A lot of them never truly experienced United winning Premier League titles consistently. So their expectations of what this club should look like are completely different. They see top 4, good vibes and moments… and think progress. But when you’ve actually seen United at their peak, you think differently. You think about control. Dominance. Standards. Sustained excellence. That’s why some of us care less about short-term results and more about whether the football can actually lead back to the top. Because being “competitive” was never supposed to be the ambition at Manchester United. Being champions was.

@NOELY1982 Because a UTD fan suggested it. Which is a nice gesture. Personally I dont see why it would bother anyone but if you dont fair enough. I'd rather your fans simply refrained from tragedy chanting.

That rebuild at Manchester City is so aggressive, and if we’re being honest, it’s hard not to feel a bit jealous watching it unfold. They’re not sentimental about players. The moment they sense decline or the need for a refresh, decisions are made early. Older players are moved on or phased out, and replacements are already lined up before it becomes a problem. And the scary part is what comes next. When a club like City starts clearing space in the squad, you just know they’re about to attack the market aggressively, younger profiles, high energy, players that fit exactly into what they want to do. Compare that to Manchester United, where transitions tend to drag, and decisions come late. That’s the difference, one club resets before things go wrong, the other tries to fix things after they already have, but we have gotten better, but not faster.

🚨 Nathan Aké could consider Man City exit in the summer window, it’s a possibility being explored. Full focus on end of the season then exit is possible. Italian clubs were keen in January and could be back to the table. 🎥 youtu.be/dHTqD-L9thk

Ruben Amorim could have gotten us Champions League football if he stayed. The foundation Carrick is thriving on? That’s Amorim’s work… the players he brought in, the basics he drilled, the partnerships and instincts he built. Even now, you can see traces of it… even if some of it is starting to fade in players like Mbeumo and Amad. And let’s not forget — Amorim is a big reason Bruno Fernandes is still at Manchester United. Bruno was close to leaving, but Amorim pulled him back in because he believed in his project. Say what you want, but the roots of this progress didn’t just appear overnight.
