I used to wonder how it was possible that Trump could have won in 2016, and then again in 2024, given how emotionally toxic and depraved he is. I donโ€™t wonder anymore. I think he won for that exact reason. Because he carried at least one broken shard to reflect the broken shards in millions of others. If youโ€™re a racist, you found your guy. If youโ€™re a misogynist, you found your guy. If money is your only religion, you found your guy. If your heart is armored shut, you found your guy. If you mock the disabled, you found your guy. If intelligence makes you insecure, you found your guy. If youโ€™re a sexual predator, you found your guy. If you trade in humiliation and conspiracy and filth, you found your guy. If youโ€™ve never done a single hour of emotional inventory, you found your guy. If you cheat, stiff contractors, bankrupt your obligations, and call it savvy, you found your guy. If you lie as easily as you breathe, you found your guy. If cruelty feels like strength, you found your guy. If white grievance is your comfort food, you found your guy. If your ego is a black hole no title can fill, you found your guy. If warmongering fuels your ego, you found your guy, If empathy feels like weakness and dominance feels like oxygen, you found your guy. If heโ€™d only carried one or two of these pathologies, he might have been dismissed as just another loud, damaged man. But he carried a buffet of them. That was the appeal. Millions could locate themselves somewhere in the wreckage. They didnโ€™t have to agree with all of it. They just had to recognize a piece of themselves in it. It was never really about him. It was about the validation. The absolution. The permission. He didnโ€™t invent the resentment; he amplified it. He didnโ€™t create the cruelty; he normalized it. He gave millions the intoxicating relief of hearing their ugliest impulses echoed back at rally volume. Trump is a symptom. The deeper illness is collective. If thereโ€™s one sentence that defines his power, itโ€™s this: โ€œHe says the things Iโ€™m thinking.โ€ And thatโ€™s the part that should chill us. Because what does it say about us that so many were thinking those things? That tens of millions of Americans harbored resentments so deep, so seething, that they were simply waiting for a demagogue to baptize them as virtue? That after decades of supposed progress on race, gender, and equality, so many white men felt so threatened, so displaced, so furious, that cruelty became a political platform? Maybe we were living in a foolโ€™s paradise, mistaking silence for healing, politeness for progress. Now the mask is off. Now we know. And knowing is a far more dangerous place to stand. โ€“ Michael Jochum, Not Just a Drummer: Reflections on Art, Politics, Dogs, and the Human Condition.

Never Trumpers called all of this a mile away. They also warned that electing Trump to a 2nd term would make nuclear โ˜ข๏ธ proliferation great again. Term 1 Trump proclaimed that North Korean nukes were an unacceptable problem & then declared the problem solved after he & KJU aka โ€œlittle rocket manโ€ โ€œfell in love.โ€ Now Trump will either have to blame everyone else for failing to meet his Iran pre war objectives or do something similar by declaring victory w the enriched uranium problem unsolved. Either way our allies will be forced to arm themselves w nukes since Trump has failed at disarming our adversaries 2x & is no longer a reliable western ally w nukes. #NeverTrumpWasRight #NeverVance

The current Trump administrationโ€™s policies differ significantly from those of his first term. Many Conservatives recognize this shift and are calling for a return to the limited government principles that have defined the Conservative movement for decades.

From @KimStrassel, who gets it exactly right in her @WSJ column today: โ€œHow this conflict ends matters more than when, both strategically and politically. Republicans need to emerge with an obvious, definable success. Anything less adds a huge new liability to a GOP that is already rolling into a midterm election with a disadvantage. Give the president credit for deciding to strike Iran despite the politics. Having degraded Iranโ€™s nuclear program last year, he might have put off further action until past the midterms, if ever. Congressional Republicans would have preferred that approach. Itโ€™s the course many presidents might have taken, knowing that Americansโ€”focused on their own cost-of-living concernsโ€”might be hard to convince, especially with Democrats and the media rooting for failure. Mr. Trump nonetheless decided the moment was now, midterms notwithstanding, and took bold action. Yet the politics remain. And having chosen to invest so much time and focus, so many resources, on this warโ€”time not spent on domestic cheerleadingโ€”itโ€™s all the more important Republicans come out of this with some political benefit. That can happen only with a clear-cut victory against Iran, one the critics canโ€™t credibly spin as defeat.โ€

Democrats are betting that voters will forget the runaway inflation of the Biden years. Finish the fight with Iran, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, end the bipolar tariff regime, and Republicans will have a real chance in November. Price stability will returnโ€”and with the tax cuts from this past year the economy will come roaring back.

Interesting exchange on CNBC this morning after inflation rose 3.3% Bidenโ€™s Secretary of Transportation @PeteButtigieg attacks gas prices and inflation under Trump. @JoeSquawk says โ€œYou averaged $3.80 under Biden for four years Mr. Secretary.โ€ He then reminds him of 9% inflation under Biden.

No one wants Iran to have nukes or for Israel to be destroyed. The problem is Bibi and Trump. They obviously lacked a comprehensive plan with contingencies. Trump lacks the ability to exercise complex strategic thinking. Heโ€™s surrounded himself with inexperienced B teamers. Everyone wants Iran to lose its enriched uranium but I donโ€™t have high confidence that Trumpโ€™s kid, his real estate buddy, and author turned VP can get this done. Clearly they did not think this all the way through. I hope Trump proves me wrong but Never Trumpers have been mostly right about him since 2015.

Ukraine should not have to retreat one inch. It is Russia who is the invader and bombing cities. Russia has lost conquered territory the last three months so it should be Russia who has to concede land.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy / ะ’ะพะปะพะดะธะผะธั€ ะ—ะตะปะตะฝััŒะบะธะน@ZelenskyyUa

We cannot simply speak about withdrawing from Donbas as a matter of compromise. Our withdrawal from Donbas would open up opportunities for the Russian Federation to occupy our most fortified territories without losses. Some people say it would take a year to a year and a half to build new fortifications. But everyone forgets: first and foremost, that is a year and a half. And even if it were less, fortifications in an open field are a completely different matter from those in urban areas. They can never provide equally strong protection. A withdrawal would give the Russian Federation room for large-scale maneuver. They could advance either toward Kharkiv or toward Dnipro, destroying our cities. And two major cities would be at risk โ€“ cities that, incidentally, generate a significant share of our GDP. So many people have died thereโ€ฆ The morale of our army would certainly decline. There would undoubtedly be a rift in society. The army โ€“ which would surely not support such steps โ€“ on one side, and society on the other. And division within society is precisely what Putin is aiming for. Moreover, there are currently 200,000 people living in the territories of Donbas that we are defending. Withdrawal does not mean preserving anything. You leave, and without any guarantees, you risk losing everything. And that is a major risk. From an interview with Rai Radio 1 (2/3).
