@GraeSullivan

Opinionated curmudgeon in training. Views (which are my own) are likely to offend anyone slightly more left than left of center.

@IlliyAli That was the same in the First Hulf War back in 1991 except it was 24 hours cable news not social media.

Israel vs Iran - Russia vs Ukraine - We now watch wars live-streamed on social media like it is Call of Duty. The Bombs drop, the people die, and we keep going on with our lives.

@JD27491 @FrankMcRae @AotearoaLib Ottomans WERE an empire but did manage to keep Arabs safe from white colonialism-which still provokes nationalism, promises freedom, then betrays, backstabs, invades, enslaves and destroys everything on it's way. Maybe look at the WORLD? Doesn't give you the right to do worse.

Also spoke with public servants who described how govt cuts are defeating the government’s own goals and how morale is at all time low. Cuts have been made indiscriminately rather than in a targeted way to achieve their desired outcomes.

Spent a week in Wellington, a counsellor friend is inundated with public servants who have either lost their jobs or are uncertain about their futures. People with families, mortgages, lives have been hung out to dry. A callous lack of empathy from governance to workers.

@toddmstephenson There's a lot of cultural rituals embraced everyday that are treated as neutral because they come from or are endorsed by pakeha culture and I'm yet to see anyone from ACT saying anything about them. Why is that?

Thank you to all the public servants who have been in touch this week expressing their concerns and experiences around the practice of karakia in their workplaces. ACT believes the public service should be religiously and culturally neutral. No one should be forced, explicitly or otherwise, to participate in any kind of daily religious or culturally rituals as public service employees. The public service should be focused on the delivery of better public services to benefit all New Zealanders. ACT is happy for anyone to practice whatever religious or cultural activities they want outside of their roles as public servants and in their own time. This aligns with our vision for New Zealand as a modern, multi-ethnic, liberal democracy where we are all alike in rights and dignity. This is also in keeping with our liberal democratic traditions, commitment to universal human rights, and growing ethnic diversity.

@Liquid_Times National did not address the regulations impacting land use nor building supply costs pre 2017 nor did they seriously look at the issue with the costs of developining infrastructure. These are the areas the current Govt is tackling differently.

National lost in 2017 largely because their housing policies failed to address the housing crisis. Now they're rehashing those failed ideas & some people think those ideas can work today. Why? What's changed in the past 7 years that will make those failed ideas work now?

@jameskjx @AlanWilkinsonNZ @maxdnharris You have SOME evidence for your first assertion. You have ZERO hard evidence for your second. As stated this is just your reckons. It is not backed up by any documentation nor from the actions of Hobson post the signing of the Treaty. In short - it is a fiction.

@AlanWilkinsonNZ @GraeSullivan @maxdnharris I agree most of the settler titles were eventually confirmed & that the "Crown" required NZCo to pay compensation (albeit meagre). that doesn't undercut my main points: - most NZCo purchases were invalid - the "Crown" tried but failed to preclude Wakefield mass colonisation

@jameskjx @AlanWilkinsonNZ @maxdnharris All he did was entirely consistent with the British establishing a British colony. You are claiming it was not this at all but designed to stop British settlement activity. The evidence does not support this.

@GraeSullivan @AlanWilkinsonNZ @maxdnharris Apart from banning land sales, sending troops to reign in the Wakefields, dissolving the Wakefield’s democratically elected government, signing the treaty of Waitangi, shutting down a pro-Wakefield newspaper, and having a stroke?

@jameskjx @AlanWilkinsonNZ @maxdnharris If you had actual hard evidence for these claims rather than just your reckons people would take you more seriously. The British were extremely good at recording what they were doing officially as part of their administration. Is there anything from records that backs you up?

@GraeSullivan @AlanWilkinsonNZ @maxdnharris So? Sounds like Wakefield was trying (yet again) to restrain the Wakefields; he failed (yet again) because he acted too late (yet again) and too weakly (yet again) then Te Rauparaha and Te Rangihaeata solved the problem for him, definitively. But I guess that’s Hobson’s choice.

@GraeSullivan @AlanWilkinsonNZ @maxdnharris "By [Hobson's] actions he seemingly went rogue and ignored his orders." no, Hobson didn't. but the NZ Co / Wakefields did: acknowledged Hobson only at gunpoint ignored Gipps & Hobson's ban on land purchases ignored Te Raupraha enforcing that ban.

@GraeSullivan @AlanWilkinsonNZ @maxdnharris The Wakefields & NZCo "raced" to get the Tory & Aurora to NZ before Hobson got here, and before any treaty was signed. why? if "The Crown" was so pro-settlement, why race? answer: they weren't in 1839; they were later on I keep saying: the treaty was too late and a failure

@GraeSullivan @AlanWilkinsonNZ @maxdnharris "events, dear boy, events" Hobson was reportedly "furious" about the Wakefields' colonisation efforts, and made the best of a bad situation with the resource that he had at the time.

@GraeSullivan @AlanWilkinsonNZ @maxdnharris well remember how the Nelson settlement worked out? Hobson was gone by then; FitzRoy confirmned Te Raupraha was legally right to wipe out Arthur Wakefield's surveyors. EG Wakefield & settlers went ballistic, literally, got Gov Grey sent, who started jailing than shooting Māori

@jameskjx @AlanWilkinsonNZ @maxdnharris No. That is what YOU wish people to start from. As I have pointed out it has little basis in reality and certainly the actions if the person who authored the Treaty after it was signed goes against that view fundamentally.

@GraeSullivan @AlanWilkinsonNZ @maxdnharris if e.g. one wants to discuss / intrepret the treaty, then that's the basis from which interpretation should start. starting from there - again pace Ned Fletcher - then differences between texts, and the actual original wordings and omissions - all make pretty consistent sense

@jameskjx @AlanWilkinsonNZ @maxdnharris Yet you persist with the fiction Hobson was tasked with the goal of STOPPING (not just restricting) British settlement activity. By his actions he seemingly went rogue and ignored his orders. Yet not one reprimand was issued against him for this gross breach of his mission.
