I recorded this 9 years ago. “The citizens of the Southern states were willing to fight and die to preserve a morally repugnant institution.” Slavery. Shout out to the US Army (with 179k Black soldiers) for destroying slavery, freeing 4m from bondage, and saving the USA! Huzzah!

I was delighted to have received the Sir Michael Howard Prize from @Mars_Clio and @britjnlmilhist for best article in 2022 last month! The plaque has now successfully made its way to my office and has pride of place on my shelves.
