@stuzi_pants Agreed, yhe Wire is definitely a level above the rest. On a different note, Narcos is very very good too

Started The Wire from scratch again last night. Managed three episodes in one sitting I still say that pound for pound it’s the greatest drama series of all time, just edging out Breaking Bad and The Sopranos Any other suggestions for one of the top spots?

PSG played more games, had their star fullback at AFCON for 5 weeks, pay double in salary taxes, get far less TV money — and still won the Champions League. Maybe the issue isn't which league is tougher. Maybe PSG are just very, very good.

PSG overspending everyone on salaries? France's employer social charges on wages run at ~45-50%. England's: 13.8%. For every €10m net salary PSG pays, they spend nearly €20m gross. That "enormous PSG wage bill" is largely taxes that EPL clubs simply don't pay.

Since Tuesday night we see a majority of English football journalists and pundits telling us that if PSG and Bayern can produce games like this, and English teams can't, it is because of the Premier League being "too tough". Let's go through the actual numbers, one by one. 🧵

@AFC_Monty_ Another dumb cliche about the Premier League being vastly superior to Ligue Un. Over the past 3 seasons (so, from the start of the 23-24 season until now), Ligue Un teams have played 35 matches against Premier League teams. Ligue Un got 15 wins, PL got 14, and there were 6 draws.

To grasp how easy PSG have it in league one. Imagine your Premier league side gets to play Spurs at home 38 times in a row. Yes. It’s that easy, your U21’s side would win the league invincible every season. And then people act surprised that they’re walking the UCL stages.

@MusialaEra PSG just got 3 clean sheets in 4 matches vs Chelsea and Liverpool yet all English "analysts" are saying that they don't know how to defend. Ridiculous.

Common misconception is that Bayern/PSG will be as open against Arsenal/Atletico as they were yesterday. Another misconception is that people think Bayern & PSG‘s defenders are terrible. They‘re not, there were just 6 Ballon d‘Or level attackers on the pitch. Arsenal/Atleti got 0

@culepodcast10 @HendrickD82 Also, there's a bigger difference that nobody conveniently remembers: there was 1 week summer break for Paris players (vs 4 to 6 weeks for Arsenal players for instance). And Paris played more official games (91 since 01/01/25 vs 86 for Arsenal)

@culepodcast10 @HendrickD82 They did postpone 2 games (only) before UCL this season and people make it sound like it's a habit. There's a Ligue game this weekend, and unlike Bayern, Paris is not yet champion so have to think carefully about who can be rested. (1/2)

For years we heard that PSG and Bayern were struggling in the late rounds of the CL because their leagues were too easy. Now apparently they thrive in the late rounds because their leagues are too easy. Oh, and City have won 4 of the last 5 titles. Could make it 5 of 6 this year. Same as Bayern. Same as PSG.

@RBairner @TheDevilsDNA Why isn’t the reverse the case? Why can’t we have a situation where he’s never fit for a UCL game but for a league game? How many games this season after coming back from injury has he not started? That’s the point.

Dembele has only failed to start a Ligue 1 match on 5 occasions this season when he's either: 1 - not been injured. 2 - not been coming back from injury. Meanwhile, Arsenal's No.9, Viktor Gyokeres, has failed to start 5 of their last 12 in the Premier League.
Nick Clayton@nick_clayton

@RBairner 100%. Dembele has started 9 league games this season. He has 1/4 of the minutes of Rice.

@Victory7177 @Itengozi This graphic is wages to revenue - it takes into account French social charges which are much higher than those for PL clubs.

I see the debate about PSG and freshness rumbles on... As I said originally, tiredness from Premier League players who play in a very physically demanding league, with greater depth of competition (due to a massive financial advantage), in 4 competitions... is a factor against the rest of Europe. But to put it down as the CRUCIAL factor, in my opinion overlooks the fact that the quality of Bayern and PSG players, is just higher. And on the freshness point... PSG played 65 games last season (compared to 58 for Arsenal). The gap between the Club World Cup final and the start of Ligue 1 was 35 days. They have played 50 games this season and you can tell... Games missed with injury all competitions (+Ligue 1 games on bench) Fabian Ruiz: 25 (0) Ousmane Dembele: 19 (1) Doue: 18 (1) Hakimi: 17 (1) Joao Neves: 13 (2) That's 5 pretty crucial players, having injury-ridden campaigns. They aren't being rested, they aren't on a 9 month holiday domestically, they aren't available for selection. For Premier League fans to complain about freshness given the MASSIVE financial advantage they have over the rest of Europe doesn't sit right with me. Especially given the lack of minutes Arteta (and you can use examples for many Premier League managers) has given to Lewis-Skelly, Norgaard, Nwaneri, amongst others, this season! Luis Enrique should be applauded for utilising his squad to set-up their spring assault, PEAKING at the right time of the season, April and May!

@DougieCritchley very well put. The level of "analysis" heard this past couple of days from supposedly leading pundits and football journalists from England has been very lazy. Also it felt like a lot of copy-pasting from one article or podcast to another
