Noting down unusual listings on the local auction web site. In this case, the complete Chronicles of an Age of Darkness by Hugh Cook (RIP). It's possible to get very good copies at local second hand stores often for half this price. These are terrible.

@exQUIZitely I read The Wizards and the Warriors by Hugh Cook several times back in the 1990's. I was still in the military and the internet was not quite a big thing yet. The book was more captivating & nuanced than Shōgun by James Clavell, which was a profound opus. goodreads.com/book/show/6883…

No disrespect to George RR Martin, but if we're talking about the greatest fantasy authors right now, it has to be Steven Erikson and Robin Hobb. Not only are both exceptionally talented writers, but they also had the vision to plan their epic sagas and the discipline to see them through to completion. One crafted a history, magic system, and pantheon of gods with incredible depth, while the other built her legacy on an intense focus on a single, deeply flawed, and achingly real character. Malazan and Realm of the Elderlings are two epic series one can confidently invest their time in because they have a conclusion.

GRRM is the greatest fantasy author alive today. His worlds are so complex that loreheads have been going for 20 years and the subject is still not exhausted. You only have to read any Sanderson slop to recognize how good GRRM really is. That's why it hurts that he isn't writing.

I used to read a lot when I was younger, mostly fantasy books. Three that I really liked were the Song of Albion series (Stephen Lawhead), the Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series (Tad Williams), and the Fionavar Tapestry series (Guy Gavriel Kay). Thinking of getting back into reading more but feeling a bit out of the loop. If you know any great fantasy books (or series), let me know. What was your favorite one?

I have prayed psalm 15, probably over 1000 times now, for the sanctification, salvation, prosperity and preservation of the Chronicles of an Age of Darkness by Hugh Cook as well as his complete works.

Hugh Cook wrote Age of Darkness about a decade too late to make in into Appendix N. Still, I highly recommend Age of Darkness and he should be included in any modern version of the list.

@micpewpew I jump between a few. Right now I'm reading Strange Company: Hearts of Darkness, Hugh Cook's The Wizards and the Warriors, I'm about halfway through a weird western, and reading the ACKs II Revised Rulebook.
