It was unclear if COVID was airborne or spread by droplets, how similar it was to SARS, etc. Masks seemed likely to work from what we knew at the time

@GunillaJoha @DrDiGiorgio @JeromeAdamsMD @anshulkundaje Maybe it just applies to US schools, but even in 2021 they found masking did make a difference: nejm.org/doi/full/10.10… To a degree, I do agree about not exaggerating and not losing trust, but experts at the time only knew so much, and many people already didn’t trust them

@GunillaJoha @DrDiGiorgio @JeromeAdamsMD @anshulkundaje I’m definitely not a US policy buff, but it seemed like implementing more comprehensive sick pay would have taken way too long to get right. They couldn’t even get the small business relief funds properly allocated, how were they gonna support comprehensive sick pay reform?

@GunillaJoha @DrDiGiorgio @JeromeAdamsMD @anshulkundaje School closures did reduce transmission rates at the height of COVID; I think you’d have to make that concession that if sick people getting paid to stay home from work slows the spread, so does keeping sick kids home. The q is how to implement either and if it’s worth the costs.
