A formal UN communication has raised serious concerns over the political and human rights situation in Bangladesh, particularly the ban on the Awami League and the use of anti-terror and tribunal laws against its members. The UN flagged issues including mass arrests, restrictions on political speech and assembly, and alleged violations of fair trial rights. These developments point to a shrinking democratic space, where opposition voices are being sidelined and due process is increasingly questioned. As the country approaches a critical political juncture, the international community is being urged to closely monitor the situation and ensure that fundamental rights and democratic principles are upheld.

Bangladesh has been weaponised by terrorists to inflict terror on liberal students deemed as dissenters.
For hours Rahid khan Pavel, a student of Dhaka University, was tortured. Even the attackers used motorbike lock pads and sticks to inflict damage on his body. He was dragged through several places before the attackers left him in front of police station in Shahbagh. And the cops did not arrest any of the attackers. Yet these fanatical activists justified this brazen rights abuse under facade of anti discrimination platform, projected as representative of Gen Z that brought regime change in Bangladesh in 2024. After regime change, this very militia group has been carrying out atrocities including mob killing of dissenters.

Bangladesh Election Update: Islamists Gain Ground as Vote Nears 🇧🇩
Bangladesh is heading to the polls on 12 February 2026 in what many observers call one of the most consequential elections in decades. With the long-dominant Awami League barred from contesting, the political landscape has shifted dramatically — and a strong Islamist alliance is now a major force.
🗳️ Islamist Momentum:
For the first time since independence, Islamist parties — led by Jamaat-e-Islami — have consolidated significant support by forming an 11-party electoral alliance, reshaping the election contest.
🌍 Who’s in the Race:
•Jamaat-led bloc vs. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) — polls suggest a very close contest.
•Student-led groups like the National Citizen Party (NCP) have surprising influence, having joined the Islamist alliance.
📉 Political Shift:
Political analysts say Bangladesh appears to be moving rightward, with voters increasingly receptive to conservative and Islamist platforms — a notable change from past politics.
💬 Why This Matters:
This is not just another election — it could redefine Bangladesh’s future direction on issues of religion, governance, and national identity. Many citizens and observers are watching closely as the nation votes in one of its most competitive elections yet.

On Saturday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres attended a joint press conference at the Intercontinental Hotel in Dhaka. The press conference was jointly called by the foreign affairs adviser to the interim government of #Bangladesh and the UN secretary-general. But journalists were not given the opportunity to ask questions here.
Journalists have alleged that it was a completely rigged press conference. The press conference was attended by journalists chosen by the chief adviser's controversial press secretary. Most of the journalists from Bangladesh's diplomatic beat were not invited to the press conference on diplomatic matters. Before the start of the press conference, journalists were unofficially told not to ask questions. They were also told not to raise their hands to ask questions. The journalists were told that they had been informed in advance who could ask questions.
At the beginning of the question-and-answer session of the press conference, it was announced that due to time constraints, only four questions would be taken. Only the four people nominated by the chief adviser's press secretary were allowed to ask questions. The first question was asked by an AFP journalist. The controversial press secretary of the chief advisor, Shafiqul Alam, was an AFP representative before joining the government service under the current government. After Shafiqul left the service, the journalist got a job at AFP. The other three journalists who got the opportunity to ask questions are also close to the press secretary Shafiqul. The three were journalists from New Age, Financial Express and Daily Star. All four of them are close to the chief advisor's office.
Talking to some journalists in Bangladesh, it was learned that the press secretary of the chief advisor was the main architect of this fake press conference. The opportunity to ask questions was not given to journalists to ensure that the UN Secretary-General was not questioned about the extreme deterioration of the human rights situation in Bangladesh, the rise of militancy, rape, murder, mob violence. Four journalists nominated for eyewash were given the opportunity to ask questions.

#WATCH | Kolkata, West Bengal: "... Sheikh Hasina is coming back as the Prime Minister. The young generation has made a mistake, but that's not their fault, they have been manipulated...," says Dr Rabbi Alam, USA Awami League Vice President and a close aide of ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
He further says, "Bangladesh is under attack and it needs to be addressed by the international community. A political uprising is fine, but that is not what has been going on in Bangladesh. This is a terrorist uprising... Many of our leaders are sheltered here in India, and we are very thankful to the Indian government for providing the alignment. I also thank PM Narendra Modi for providing a safe travel passage for our Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. We are thankful to the people of India... We want to ask the Bangladesh Advisor to step down and go back to where he came from... Sheikh Hasina is coming back as the Prime Minister. The young generation has made a mistake but that's not their fault, they have been manipulated..."
