Born in Kolkata in 1901, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was an eminent educationist, former Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University, statesman and one of the foremost architects of modern West Bengal. During the turbulent years of Partition, he played a pivotal role in advocating for the inclusion of large parts of Bengal within India, helping shape the state's present identity and future. Temple projects and industrialisation are not mutually exclusive. The Tirumala Tirupati ecosystem alone attracts over 2–3 crore pilgrims annually and supports tens of thousands of jobs across hospitality, transport, retail, flower cultivation, food services and tourism. Even in West Bengal: 🛕 Dakshineswar attracts millions of visitors every year and supports an entire ecosystem of shops, ferries, guides, hotels and local businesses. 🛕 Kalighat is one of India's most visited Shakti Peethas, sustaining thousands of livelihoods linked to pilgrimage and tourism. 🛕 Tarapith's economy is heavily dependent on religious tourism, with hotels, transport operators, restaurants and retailers employing thousands of people. 🛕 ISKCON Mayapur attracts visitors from over 100 countries and has transformed the local economy through tourism, hospitality and services. Similarly, Ayodhya, Varanasi and Ujjain have witnessed major investments in roads, airports, hotels, public spaces and tourism infrastructure driven by pilgrimage demand. A temple is not a steel plant. But saying it creates no employment is simply incorrect. Bengal needs industries, IT parks, ports, logistics hubs and manufacturing. It can also benefit from tourism and religious tourism projects. Development is not a one choice menu.
