🚧 One of the least documented mega urban mobility projects currently under construction in Howrah
A MASSIVE multi-span ROB is taking shape near the Shalimar railgate, with the structure appearing to connect the Coal Depot side with the Phari/Shalimar corridor through a grade-separated crossing over the extensive railway yard.
The scale of the steel girder work, long elevated approaches and complex alignment suggests a major future mobility upgrade for the entire Shalimar logistics + station zone potentially eliminating one of the region’s long-standing railgate bottlenecks.
Surprisingly underreported project.

Yes there are actually multiple ongoing/recently proposed riverfront & ghat redevelopment initiatives across the Hooghly corridor.
Some notable ones:
• ₹89 crore modern Howrah ferry terminal under advanced construction
• Redevelopment/restoration plans for Kumartuli, Nimtala, Chotelal, Surinam & several other ghats
• Hooghly riverbank revitalisation project with SMP Kolkata + IIT Kharagpur
• Proposed river cruise terminal infrastructure
• Riverfront beautification stretches between Kumartuli Champatala & Jorabagan sections
The larger pattern seems to be:
moving from isolated ghat beautification toward a broader Hooghly riverfront redevelopment narrative.

🚨 FINALLY — THE MOST AWAITED NOTICE FOR ORANGE LINE METRO HAS ARRIVED 🚇
Kolkata Police has officially issued the traffic notification for segment launching work at Chingrighata Junction on the Orange Line Metro corridor.
Work will take place between: • P317–P318
• P318–P319
⏰ Major traffic diversions & flank closures on E.M. Bypass will remain active during: • 15–18 May
• 22–25 May
This is significant because segment launching marks visible viaduct construction progress on one of the most critical pending stretches of the New Garia ↔ Airport metro corridor.

If approvals, land related clearances and execution move on schedule, a realistic best case estimate would likely be around 2031–33 for phased opening/public use

🛣️ NHAI has officially initiated the DPR stage for a proposed 6-lane elevated corridor along the 16-km Belghoria Expressway in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal.
The tender was officially floated on 12 May 2026.
Why this matters:
The Belghoria Expressway is one of the most strategically important connectors in the Kolkata region, linking: • NH16 • NH19 • Dankuni freight belt • Jessore Road • Kolkata Airport
The proposed elevated corridor aims to separate long distance freight traffic from local traffic potentially reducing one of the region’s biggest congestion bottlenecks.
Interesting part: This also aligns with the larger logistics & freight modernization narrative emerging around the Kolkata–Dankuni corridor.

Interesting move because cleanliness responsiveness — not just infrastructure expansion — is becoming an increasingly important part of passenger experience modernization across Indian Railways.

Interesting point about Sundarbans & river erosion
A lot of Bengal’s future discussion revolves around metros, factories & logistics but climate resilience, drainage modernization and river management may become equally important long-term infrastructure priorities for the state.
Especially for a delta region like Bengal.

The Sundarbans are heavily damaged, and vast stretches of land have already been swallowed by the Ganga River. The problem is largely ignored, it should be treated as a high priority. Rapid industrialization is needed across sectors, with greater focus on automotive manufacturing, heavy engineering, IT, and food processing. Urban planning is equally important. Kolkata and other older urban areas such as Burdwan and Baharampur need significant reengineering, particularly in drainage systems, electricity infrastructure, broadband connectivity, footpaths, water supply, and the overall physical environment. Primary education also requires critical appraisal. Many school buildings resemble historical structures, teacher absenteeism remains a concern, recruitment is often viewed as biased, and students need far greater exposure to modern technology.

@Spencer_smith_1 Metro is already in construction at a larger scale with expansion plan which was being stopped by the previous government, so right now we are looking at large scale transformation of metro in just 5 years

That’s exactly why Mumbai solving ultrahigh frequency suburban operations matters for the rest of India too.
When the largest and most complex network develops successful systems, rolling stock and operational models, smaller networks can adapt them much faster.
We are not isolated systems competing against each other. We are part of one national rail ecosystem
