Tarrytown New York’s Effie Phillips-Staley is running to represent New York’s 17th District in Congress this November, a seat currently held by GOP Rep. Mike Lawler. She spoke to streamer Hasan Piker about two trips she took in the past year: one to her mother’s home country of El Salvador, and another to Hebron in the occupied West Bank. There, she recalls a Palestinian farmer whose fields had been burned by toxic substances dropped by Israeli drones, telling her that “the only thing that can stop this is pressure from the United States.” “It felt so terrible to look at him and think of how much time it’s going to take to turn the gear so that the United States can do the moral thing and actually apply that pressure, she said. “And is he going to be alive?” Phillips-Staley is the daughter of a Salvadoran immigrant mother and a U.S. veteran father. Democrats see the Hudson Valley seat as a top pickup opportunity this November. Nonpartisan analysts have shifted the race to a “toss-up” @effie4congress | @hasanthehun

Village Preservation (GVSHP)
Just released: our latest historic image archive collection of the Village Halloween Parade in the 1980s. It’s an incredible time capsule of this beloved event 40 years ago when it first moved to Sixth Ave.! Relive the memories or learn how it went down: villagepreservation.org/campaign-updat…

@ChazNuttycombe Attributing party to voters in states without party registration, based on primary participation, is problematic because lower-turnout voters tend not to vote in primaries at all.

Nancy Mace gives Dems the votes to pass the War Powers resolution. Meeks said go talk to Republicans. Prem talked to Mace, I talked to Davidson. The votes are there. If Dems don’t put it on the floor now it’s because they don’t want it to pass now.
Zeteo@zeteo_news

Just as Democrat Gregory Meeks told Drop Site he would not put the War Powers Resolution to a vote because he didn't think it would win, Rep. Nancy Mace told @prem_thakker the case she makes for one. Mace's possible support could’ve been enough to help pass the resolution.

The City Council just voted to effectively ban protests near schools and houses of worship. As Trump and ICE escalate their attacks on New Yorkers, we need to resist more, not less. I oppose the buffer zone bills, and will defend our right to protest against fascism.

This piece is paywalled, and I would never ever give the Atlantic a dime, but the essay begins its claim that Canadian Jews are being "purged from public life" with the story of a Jewish professor of medicine who quit teaching because he was offended by students' and colleagues statements about Israel. That's not being "purged from public life." That's deciding you can't tolerate criticism of a foreign country to which you have an irrational attachment. By the way, as a half Palestinian, I can assure you I've had to hear MUCH worse about Palestinians and Muslims at workplaces and at school, and it never occurred to me to quit and cry victim.

I wrote a piece for @TheAtlantic about how Jews are being purged from public life. I call it the Polite Pogrom. theatlantic.com/international/…

Christopher Columbus was so infamously cruel that the Spanish crown paid to send someone to Hispaniola in 1500 to investigate. This resulted in a 48-page report detailing the testimony of two dozen witnesses, and the investigator himself, of how Columbus had mismanaged the colony, cut off ears and noses, tortured colonists that questioned his authority, paraded women naked, and sold natives into slavery. He was arrested, tried, and stripped of his titles. Some people that witnessed his barbarism, who had initially supported and participated in his colonization efforts, became so disgusted by Columbus's behavior that they also published accounts of his atrocities and began advocating for the rights of Indigenous populations. In particular, a contemporaneous Pope, and many other lesser Catholic figures, condemned Columbus explicitly, viewing his behaviors as grave offenses against G-d. Matt, you are literally more of a cretin than people that died before 1600 BCE. I wouldn't call you a conservative, I would call you a barbarian.
Matt Walsh@MattWalshBlog

Christopher Columbus is the ultimate IQ test. You immediately know that someone is a retarded halfwit if they start screeching some nonsense about how Columbus was a genocidal maniac or whatever. Intelligent students of history understand that he is one of the great men of western civilization. This is an awesome move by the White House.

Apparently the Triangle Building @ 675 Hudson St. (which we got landmarked in 2003) has a new claim to fame: it’s where #Banksy was arrested for “vandalism” 25 years ago, leading to the revelation of his identity this past week. More: facebook.com/share/p/1B6kzu…
