For one struct, Who cares. But if you are building a game or a high-performance system with an array of 10 million of these objects, you just saved 40 Megabytes of RAM just by pressing Cut and Paste on your variable names.

The compiler silently injects invisible, dead bytes between your variables so that the next variable lines up perfectly with the CPU's natural chunks. In struct Bad, it adds 3 dead bytes after a, and 3 more after c. You are losing 6 whole bytes to absolutely nothing.

The only difference is that Carlsen still plays, just not classical. The new fast classical format was introduced for him to return. I don't have a strong opinion on it yet, but here's what's clear: Carlsen has played 34 classical games since 2024. Not technically inactive by FIDE rules, but the rules need to change. Tennis figured this out. If you don't play, you lose ranking. Nakamura, world no. 2, would have played almost the same 34 games as Carlsen since 2024 if not for Mickey Mouse events. So the only two players rated over 2800 are, in the best case, semi-retired from classical chess. Caruana? 151 classical games since 2024. Rating consistently around 2800, now world no. 3. He is the best active player in the world. Period. The best player is determined by classical rating, and it should be determined by who actually plays, not by comparing active players to retired ones.
