This Tuesday Dr. Melvin Vopson joins me to discuss a groundbreaking new theory that suggests gravity may be evidence our universe is running like a vast computational system, or possibly even a simulation. In his 2025 paper in AIP Advances, the University of Portsmouth physicist proposes that gravity isn’t a fundamental force at all. Instead, it emerges naturally as the universe constantly tries to minimize and compress information. He builds on his earlier Second Law of Infodynamics, the idea that while physical entropy always increases, information entropy does the opposite: it tends to decrease or stay minimal over time. Applying this to gravity, Vopson shows that when objects are spread out they require far more “bits” to describe their positions and states. By pulling together, the system dramatically reduces the total information needed, a kind of cosmic data compression. Remarkably, this informational pull reproduces Newton’s law of gravity exactly.
