Exactly. Why, if Fernandez ostensibly admits in his communique to the SSPX from February that there are still points of doctrine of Vatican 2 that need to be clarified, hasn’t this happened by now? (The cynic in me suspects no one in Rome knows how to clarify things without admitting there’s complete discontinuity.)

Would you let Leo teach your children Sunday school?

Pope Leo XIV on the upcoming SSPX Episcopal Consecrations: “I am considering making another appeal saying don't do this, let's try to live the communion of the Church. But it's their choice. One must realize what it means for them and for the Church. Certainly, the division among Christians is a painful point. However, they refuse to accept some fundamental elements of the Church, starting with several points from the Second Vatican Council. If they make that decision, I'm sorry but we have to move on.”

While I hope and pray the Vatican will extend mercy and approve the SSPX consecrations, I also would warn SSPX attendees that they're playing a dangerous game if they continue to receive SSPX confessions after any excommunications.

“Today, to be in full communion with the Holy See, one must accept those affirmations and teachings of Vatican II that are pastoral and certainly non-definitive in terms of their magisterial nature. This raises an important question: Why is the unconditional acceptance of the texts of Vatican II presented as a conditio sine qua non for full communion with the Holy See, while no comparable requirement exists with respect to the pastoral, disciplinary, or non-definitive teachings of the preceding twenty Ecumenical Councils?” — Bishop Athanasius Schneider
