RETURN TO CLOCAENOG: My journey to re-live Colin McRaeโs historic 1995 world rally championship victory I'll never forget the morning of Wednesday, 22 November 1995. TV network news coverage was dominated by one story - the prospect of Colin McRae clinching the world rally championship later that day. With his 17-second overnight lead, most people felt that it might just actually happen. I made the decision the previous evening that my two young sons were not going to school that day. I woke them up and told them we were going to the final stage of the Network Q, to see history being made - and they didn't have to go to school. As you can imagine, they were delighted! We piled into the car and set off for North Wales. The excitement in the air was palpable as we joined thousands of other rally fans converging on SS28, Clocaenog East. We were all there for one reason: to hopefully witness McRae become the first-ever British world rally champion. I was no stranger to spectating, but the atmosphere and anticipation that Wednesday in Clocaenog were electric. McRae and Derek Ringer's approach was heralded not just by the unmistakable sound of the Subaru Impreza 555, but it was accompanied by the sound of cheering in the distance, getting louder and louder as he approached. In a blur of blue and yellow, McRae's car flew past us, the sound of its engine reverberating through our chests. The cheers grew even louder, if that was possible. It was a moment of pure magic - you had to be there to truly understand. Fast forward to today, and my boys are grown men. But whenever we get together and if the conversation turns to rallying, their eyes still light up when we reminisce. I recently revisited Clocaenog - to find and film the exact location of the SS28 flying finish. The trees stand silent now, a far cry from the raucous celebrations of '95. But as I stood there, I had goosebumps. I could almost hear the echoes of the cheers and visualise the waving saltires that day; the roar and chat of McRae's Subaru, and the excited shouts of my young sons. Memories to cherish, for a lifetime. Thank you, Colin.
