@citadelchief @atrembath These are the types of laws that could be made instead of straight up banning them. I proposed something like each center needs solar panels that provide >=80% of energy consumed (just an idea). Much easier to implement imo and better than banning.

@Knightwolfbr @atrembath Yeah, but it's actually much more workable than they let on. Our Google center load shares between 3 different sources, one of them being quasi state-owned, which limits the strain on any one provider. Since then, new centers aren't doing that though.

AI data centers are maybe the single biggest source of demand pull ever for nuclear, geothermal, batteries, transmission, and grid flexibility. So naturally climate activists are trying to ban them.
Jordan Weissmann@JHWeissmann

Relatedly, it's not obvious that banning data centers is a net win for climate activists. Yes, they're keeping some fossil fuels on the grid. They're also arguably the key force driving the U.S.'s clean tech industry now, after Trump eviscerated EV subsidies.

@citadelchief @atrembath I know about the water stuff and looking at studies on it, they don't use as much water as previously thought. It is the electricity that is more worrisome. If data centers also provided a lot of their own power, I would have no issue with them.

@Knightwolfbr @atrembath Could be (and likely so in most cases). I just know that in my area (we have a Google data center) people were complaining about them using up our water table and there wasn't much talk about electric bills. In fact, we had that center almost 10 years before any price hike.

@citadelchief @atrembath Oh for sure climate activists are using this as an opportunity. Climate activists are also the easy people to blame if something doesn't go their way. I think the majority issue for people though is the spike in energy prices.

@Knightwolfbr @atrembath It's both. Anger/fear/uncertainty in local communities is being used by climate/environment advocacy groups for momentum. Like most things, there's an "ally of convenience" aspect to the fight against data centers.

Do I personally think data centers should just be built wherever, whenever? No. But hyperscalers are already moving toward building out their own power, which I think is a much better solution.

Government in a nutshell: ✅Create massive 4 hour TSA lines ✅ Do nothing to address the problem for weeks ✅ Pass out free water bottles to people in line instead of fixing it ✅ Confiscate those water bottles at the end of the line, because TSA says they're dangerous
Daily Wire@realDailyWire

While Dems crash out over ICE agents in airports, ICE is literally handing out water bottles and saving spots so people can use the restroom.

@JHWeissmann A quick thought is require all data centers to build solar panels to cover minimum of 80% of the electric used.

One thing about an AI data center ban is that, in any world where you could pass it, you could also probably just pass legislation making it easier to build out new power on the grid instead.
More Perfect Union@MorePerfectUS

BREAKING: @AOC and @SenSanders are introducing a ban on AI data centers and other hyperscale data centers. The ban would remain until Congress passes new AI legislation. That legislation must ensure AI is safe, benefits workers, and doesn't raise electricity prices.

The idea to have NIL transfer fees for all sports is fantastic btw. Should be implemented asap.

Meanwhile, the Senate just voted to block an effort by Chuck Schumer to hold a vote on a standalone bill to pay TSA workers. Ninth time Republicans have blocked pay for TSA workers, per Schumer's office.

Pizza making has been fully automated. This has been true for years. But if you go into a pizza shop across the country, it's mostly still people doing it by hand. Can automate != will automate
