Last year I found a Spanish podcast I REALLY wanted to listen to (the topics are facinating), but I could never seem to understand enough of the rapid speech to be able to enjoy the episodes. This week I've been listening and can now understand maybe 80% of a 2 hour episode. +

@MLautmer I sometimes switch between Spanish and English. I am very conscious, but I only do it with people who also speak English and can understand.

The good news is that I've been working really hard on my Welsh for a couple of weeks now, and I'm starting to see some real tangible improvement. Having the exam booked seems to be the push I needed to properly lock in.

@MaisysLangs As far as I know, the Welsh Duolingo course, which stopped being updated last year (maybe the year before), was fully developed by volunteers. Some of these volunteers are part of Welsh learner Facebook groups and have shared this information in the groups.

I hate to say it, but one week of Duolingo is really helping my Welsh. I totally disagree with Duolingo's use of Al and had stopped using it for everything else, but with limited resources for Welsh, this is my only option 😕 I have to improve enough to pass my exam this summer

@MattLearnsLingo I’m in awe of you and your language progress (and language list!). I still remember when I opened this account only a little over 2 years ago and you were still studying… Spanish (ehem 👀) and I think you were just starting Dutch. Very inspirational and admirable. 👌🙌

I’m going steady with 🇩🇪 and to be honest, in 10 years, this is the first time I feel that I’m learning something and will be able to speak the language someday🥹😅.

Thank you! So the NT2 (“Nederlands als Tweede Taal”) exams are run by the Dutch government at levels B1 and B2. The CNaVT (“Certificaat Nederlands als Vreemde Taal”) are run by de Taalunie, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen at levels A2 through to C1. The NT2 exams are therefore focussed very much on language for living and working in the Netherlands, whilst CNaVT features more Belgian/Flemish dialect and is perhaps biased towards language for further/higher education.

My 2025 language progress: - Passed B1 Dutch exams (CNaVT exam in May, NT2 exams in September/October). - Completed A2 level Maltese with L-Università ta’ Malta. - Dabbled in Icelandic, Lithuanian, Polish, Esperanto and Italian. My 2026 language goals: - B2 Dutch exams (NT2 in January - March, CNaVT in May). - A1 and A2 Italian (CILS) exams in June and October. - Learn a language (TBC) with a different (non-Latin) alphabet. - Continue dabbling in Polish and Esperanto. #langtwt #languagelearning #languages

@NoKristof Thank you, Kristof. It’s always the same languages 😅. At this point, I don’t see myself choosing a new one (except for the dabbles). I just want to focus on the ones I already know and get them to the highest level possible. How about you? What are your languages for 2026?

@Cayden_Cline That’s the way it is in Welsh: mynd i’r gwaith, mynd i’r ysgol, mynd i’r gwely… it sounds weird if you translate into English, but languages like Spanish use the same structure as Welsh, with the definite article. Not sure if this helped. 😓

@MLautmer Not really. I’ve always (always!) been interested in English. I knew I wanted to major in English since I was in primary school (!). Then during my major, I took German as well. And then it all was just a snowball effect from there. Also… Happy New Year!!! 🎆🎊

All my Spanish WhatsApp groups are already full of Happy New Year while the Germans are waiting for midnight like civilised people. Same timezone, vast difference in mentality.
